Top 10 Most Exciting Horses to Watch in Show Jumping Right Now

Ask any sport horse breeder with dreams of glory in their hearts and they’ll tell you: the demands of the sport have changed in recent decades, and so has the kind of horse that can consistently produce clear rounds. Not so very long ago, success in showjumping was all about a big stride and the ability to clear tall fences in a single bound. Today, the sport is as much about footspeed and cat-like agility as it is the athleticism to jump 1.60m+. And that’s not all. Bravery is a must for open water jumps under the lights and towering, brightly-colored walls, which look less like fences and mor ..read more

Games of the I Olympiad
Horse Network

For more than 1,500 years the world was void of the Olympic Games. That void was thanks to Roman Emperor Theodosius I who was so hell-bent on promoting Christianity, that he put the kibosh on the Olympics as he felt they were equitable to paganism. And so, the world went cold turkey for a very long time. But then about 125 years ago a fellow by the name of Pierre Baron de Coubertin took a notion to restart the Games. The first thing he did was form the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894. As de Coubertin was from France, the IOC was formed in Paris, which is why the official language ..read more

This weekend, Lillie Keenan officially closed out her winter circuit in Wellington with a double bang. The American rider won both the CSI 4* Adequan® WEF Challenge Cup qualifier on Friday and Sunday’s $200,000 IDA Development CSI4* Grand Prix during WEF Week 11 aboard her longtime partner, Agana van het Gerendal Z. “He has really become my soldier; he does whatever class I need him to do, whether it’s a speed [round], Nation’s Cup, or grand prix,” Keenan said on Friday of the 13-year-old Zangersheide stallion. “It’s like he’s a chameleon; he can morph into whatever I need him for.” On Fr ..read more

Q&A: How much does having the ideal ‘equitation body’ impact your ability to be successful in the Big Eq?
Horse Network
by Dana Hart-Callanan

This is very hard because you must understand that, truthfully, the equitation division is like figure skating: the look does matter. As a trainer, I personally don’t think the best riders are always tall and long-legged and skinny. In equitation, though, the smoothness and the picture are so important, and many people consider riders with that body type to be “pretty” on most horses. That’s why the equitation ring has gotten the rap that you must be long-legged and skinny in order to do well. That is not the case 100% of the time anymore, but for sure, having that body type does help. There h ..read more

Jessica Dertell doesn’t always win, but she’s certainly a safe bet to get the job done. The 19-year-old Australian dressage rider has contested 111 international classes to date and won 64 of them. That’s a 58% win rate. And not just with one horse. Since making her international debut in 2018, Dertell has collected FEI victories in the CDIY at CDIU25 divisions on Eskara de Jeu, Gladstone M.H., Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar, and CDI3* and World Cup wins on Cennin and Syriana. Her latest W: Saturday’s FEI World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle at PSI Dressage & Jumping with the Stars in Werribee, AUS ..read more

I have watched and been a part of countless Nations Cups. The new Longines League of Nations is a huge step forward for the sport, in my opinion. The format changes the game completely. Debuted in 2024, the new and improved global team series sees the top 10 teams in the world compete over four legs at events around the world, with the top eight advancing to the Final in Barcelona. Leg 2 of the Longines League of Nations was hosted at World Equestrian Center Ocala on Saturday over a course set by Ireland’s Alan Wade. After two thrilling rounds of the world’s best going head to head, Ireland em ..read more

In the biggest and toughest Grand Prix on American soil this year to date, Swiss superstar Martin Fuchs and his 12-year-old grey gelding Leone Jei showed impeccable precision in the Lugano Diamonds 5* Grand Prix at the World Equestrian Center in Ocala, Florida. Fuchs takes home $108,000 for his victory, beating out teammate Steve Guerdat on Albfuehren’s Iashin Sitte by 86/100’s of a second in a four-horse jump off that had the capacity crowd on the edge of their seats. American Callie Schott and Garant had the crowd roaring as the last entry in the jump off as she finished 1.22 seconds behind ..read more

The Story Behind King Edward’s Avant-Garde Bridle Style
Horse Network
by Marina Callahan

King Edward’s crown is missing something. If you noticed his new bridle set up at the Longines League of Nations in Riyadh last month or in the Rolex Grand Prix in s’Hertogenbosch the other week, it looks a little bare in front. The 14-year-old gelding is showing sans brow band and with an extra throat latch. It doesn’t take detective work to conclude the World no. 1 has an aversion to second best. (See: von Eckermann’s face post podium in Holland.) So, the Swede seeks perfection in the details, and unsurprisingly, King Edward is an ultra-sensitive ride from bridle to boots. “He’s delicate wit ..read more

Spring Winds

Grrr…. Need I say more than the title of this post? Spring is so lovely—temps warm up, pastures get green, months of dirt can be washed off—but oh, the wind. Horses don’t like it any more than we do. Why not? A horse’s primary sensation of the world occurs through smell. She’s a prey animal, so her brain makes her vigilant to anything new or potentially hazardous in the environment. She doesn’t want to become some predator’s dinner, right? Wind blows scents away. A light wind alters the horse’s knowledge of where a scent comes from. Just a few feet upwind, and she won’t smell a thing even with ..read more
