#GOALS
Sprout Occupational Therapists

Goals. As health professionals we throw this word around all the time. We set goals with our clients, talk about them with teachers and health professionals. We plan our sessions in relation to these goals, we constantly review and evaluate them too. It is safe to say we use the term so much, that sometimes we might forget that YOU and your family might not. It is like we become desensitised to the word. “Let’s set some goals” you hear us chirpily suggest in feedback meetings or prior to therapy sessions commencing. But what does this actually mean?? A goal in sport is obvious, you can clearl ..read more

How Can I help My Child and Our Family Thrive Instead of Just Survive?
Sprout Occupational Therapists
by Kate Wormell

Many of our families that come to Sprout discuss the strategies they use in everyday life to ‘Survive’ with their child’s challenging behaviours. Here we like to help our families ‘Thrive’ in everyday life rather than just ‘Survive’. This can be very tricky and requires a child’s caregiver to ‘step back’ and use challenging situations and opportunities for our children to learn and thrive rather than just survive through a situation and wait for it to happen again. Dan J. Siegal; Author of the Whole Brain Child, explains that by understanding how our child’s brain works will not only he ..read more

Making the most of the hard times
Sprout Occupational Therapists

We all have them, sometimes they last longer than other times. Maybe there has just been too much change and your child is having trouble coping. Maybe they are starting school, or moving schools. Maybe you cut their toast in triangles instead of squares. Regardless of how we all got here, you are having a hard time with your child and just want it to STOP. Often our first reaction, our mindset is to wish it away. As parents and carers we are often quick to jump in and want to “fix” things for our children. We tell our kids to stop crying, or to not be sad. We say things like, “Don’t worry” or ..read more

The keys to teaching your child a new skill
Sprout Occupational Therapists

Can you believe it…my little man is about to turn one?! I know certainly cannot believe it! The past twelve months have been an incredible rollercoaster ride, filled with magical first moments, appointments left right and centre, not one uninterrupted night’s sleep, but most of all, learning so many important life lessons. One of my biggest challenges this year has been to try and improve Hudson’s day and night time sleeps. Unfortunately we set up some less than ideal habits in the early days as a result of him having severe reflux, which meant that we soothed him to sleep every sleep, rather ..read more

One of our core values at Sprout is always being open to improving our OT service so we keep providing the best OT service we can.  We regularly check in at our team meetings to see how we are aligning ourselves with this value.  We have spent the last few months reviewing this and evaluating what needs to change so we can continue to provide the best OT services for kids on the Mornington Peninsula.  Our health system is undergoing some major changes and within a few weeks the official rollout of the NDIS in our area starts.  Our Sprout families are important to us so we w ..read more

Thinking of applying for NDIS funding for your child? During 2018, many of our Sprout families will begin registering for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) during its roll out in our catchment area. During this registration process, you will be required to complete formal paperwork and may need to provide supporting documentation as part of your application for funding.
