There’s a new tequila RTD on the scene — just in time for outdoor drinking season.
On Tuesday, White Claw announced the newest addition to its lineup of canned offerings: the White Claw Tequila Smash. In a press release, the brand disclosed that its first-ever tequila drink will be a blend of seltzer, authentic tequila, real fruit juice, and blue agave nectar.
Following the tremendous success of its hard seltzers, the brand launched a vodka-based beverage in 2023. Given tequila’s status as the most rapidly growing spirit in the country, it was only a matter of time before White Claw integrate ..read more

A love letter to Blue Weber agave, Tequila Don Julio Alma Miel celebrates the plant that it’s made from in every sip. Crafted with the delectable nectar found at the core of the agave plant, which is transformed into rich oven-roasted agave honey, this spirit boasts notes of wildflowers and dried fruits on the nose. Robust and flavorful, the oven-roasted agave honey creates a palate-pleasing dream — one ready to be enjoyed straight or mixed into an ultra-smooth classic cocktail, like the Negroni perhaps.

With countless agave species to choose from, Blue Weber has been the one and only genus to be used in tequila distillation. In spite of that, the tequila space has evolved tremendously over the years. From blancos to the introduction of barrel-aged expressions and Curado infusion techniques — and producers are still finding new ways to push the envelope and experiment with different elements of terroir to set their products apart from the competition.
Now, agave spirits make up the second-best-selling spirit category in the country behind vodka. It’s also still growing, flooded with both cele ..read more

Initially, I thought my latest book, “Dusty Booze: In Search of Vintage Spirits,” would mainly focus on vintage bourbon collectors, and indeed those stories are common throughout, including one dusty hunter’s pursuit of a priceless collection that may have once belonged to an eccentric Hollywood legend. But, as I began to delve into other vintage spirits categories, I found other incredible tales mostly forgotten in modern times. In this excerpt from the book, out on March 5, I tell of the unsung American who may have got the ball rolling in turning tequila into the nearly $10 billion global ..read more

It’s not news that tequila is near the top of spirits sales in the U.S. right now, outselling even red-hot American whiskey and just a few paces behind longtime leader vodka, according to the Distilled Spirits Council (DISCUS). Last year, tequila sales totaled 31.6 million cases, a rise of 5.7 percent over 2022. Revenue-wise, the category’s growth was even stronger, increasing 7.9 percent, equivalent to $476 million in additional sales.
Vibrant across the board, tequila is strongest in the premium-and-above tiers, where 100-percent agave brands dominate, accounting for at least 70 percent of ..read more

Though the days of backyard barbecues and impromptu beach trips are far behind us (for now), there’s still plenty of cold-weather fun to look forward to.
When hosting, choosing which cocktail to serve is integral to throwing a soirée guests won’t soon forget. To keep things simple, opt for a tried-and-true classic cocktail.
Timeless and straightforward pours like the Campari Negroni or the fashionable and rich SKYY Espresso Martini are excellent crowd-pleasers. If you’re throwing a party and want guests to have options, a mix of lighter, citrusy drinks like the Grand Margarita and ..read more

After 13 years of consecutive growth, tequila exports have finally fallen, according to a report from the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT). Exports of the Mexican spirit measured in at 401.4 million liters in 2023, signifying an overall decrease of 4.2 percent by volume compared to 2022.
Tequila exports first started seeing substantial growth in 2009, when Mexico was shipping 136.4 million liters per year. Since then, tequila’s popularity took off in key markets like the U.S., accelerating the category’s growth. In 2022, the Mexican spirit seemed unstoppable, surpassing American whiskey in te ..read more

Do you feel it? The not-so-subtle shift? It has people spending $400 at upscale supermarket chain Erewhon and supermodels creating non-alcoholic, functional beverages. Culture has been building steadily toward “healthy lifestyles” being in vogue and nightlife is far from immune. There are more mocktails, juice options, and non-alcoholic beers than ever before. A new party at the East Village’s Joyface, billed as a “nighttime disco for millenials,” runs from 5 to 10 p.m., allowing partiers to be asleep before midnight. In some less wholesome spaces, ketamine has eclipsed cocaine’s long-term po ..read more

In October 2023, during my last stint in Ukraine reporting on the ongoing war with Russia, I ducked out to neighboring Romania for a desperately needed break from work. The Ukrainian bars and restaurants that sustained and impressed me at every turn, from the overstuffed chocolate Suprême croissants from Cheese Bakery in Lviv that transported me back to Lafayette in New York to the nuanced hospitality of displaced bartenders from Kyiv to Kharkov — all of which had one unexpected, tequila-centric gesture in common.
But the moment I crossed the border into Romania, I became gluttonous for Ameri ..read more
