Tim Pride’s Memorial Evensong

Saturday 9th October  Every time I look at Tim’s picture on the front of today’s order, I find myself shaking my head. Though 18 long months have gone by since we lost him, Tim’s sudden death from Covid is still un-believable. How can someone so vital – not only so full of life but also so pivotal to the life of the local community – be no longer with us? As has been said, if his life was the note, now we sense only the silence. But maybe, as we come together to seek comfort and insight from Tim’s life, we can sense more. If we cannot still hear his footsteps, can we not still ‘taste and ..read more

Sunday 10th October, Making Preparations, 2 Chr.35 Lk.22:1-13  Prior planning and preparation prevents AHEM- ‘particularly’ poor performance,” said my School Cadet Instructor and Geography master, as he walked past a particularly wet and miserably 14 year old me on exercise, on a dreary and damp Salisbury plain. Him – dry as a bone – covered head to foot in waxed rain gear. And of course, as always, the teacher is right.     Preparation is vital in most areas of our lives. We prepare in all kinds of ways for every-day activities, we make special preparations for important ..read more

Monday 4th October  My hearty congratulations to all of you! For your attention to detail, your striving for excellence, the kindness of your vision, the depth of your persistence, and the enthusiasm that you have ignited in Winchester. Well done! Congratulations too on blagging the Bible Society’s Psalm 23 garden, which I am so looking forward to seeing in its new home!  This wonderful Psalm 23, which we sung a few moments ago, is undeniably the nation’s favourite. Written by King David about a thousand years before the birth of Jesus, the former s ..read more

Harvest Sunday – Canon Roly Riem

Sunday 3rd October, Mat 6.25-33 Entering the Harvest Mystery Few moments of shock await us at 8am as we settle down daily in silence in the St Alphege Chapel for morning prayer, but last week was different. As the weather had just turned, I’d fish out a tweed jacket to wear, fresh from its clothes bag protecting it over the winter. As I looked down in prayerful silence, I noticed to my horror an enormous moth hole on the right lapel, and suddenly I felt, like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, naked and ashamed before the Lord; well, before the Dean at least. And this is interesting because I ..read more

Sunday 26th September, Mark 9.38-end ‘WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON?’ Whose side are you on? Which side are you on? Often they amount to the same thing. Imagine you’re back in the English Civil War: which side are you on? The fate of the country and the fate of your family hang upon your answer. Black Lives Matter: will you boo or cheer when the players take the knee? There’ll be an election eventually: whose side will you be on? Will you vote tribally or in conscience? And, tragically, the Taliban may want to know of the Afghan people: which side are you on? In Afghanistan, lives may depend upon it ..read more

Evensong – Revd Marianne Foster

Sunday 26th September I wonder, what is your greatest need? How you answer of course may depend on how your day has been! Your may feel that your greatest need is a financial need, a health need, or some other need… The truth is, unless we see the greater picture we will never be able to properly assess our greatest need. Our two readings today reveal two mediators. The book of Exodus is about God redeeming His people through the work of the mediator Moses. The Gospels are about God redeeming His people through the work of the mediator Jesus. Moses was a type of Christ which means that he w ..read more

Sunday 19th September, Isaiah 45 – the Potters Hands “I have aroused Cyrus in righteousness, and I will make all his paths straight; he shall build my city and set my exiles free” In 2016, when Donald Trump was running for election in the US, a strange thing happened (well, many strange things happened but this is really strange). Many Christians and Jews began to imagine Mr Trump as a modern-day Cyrus. An unwitting instrument of God. A remarkable feat of conceit you might think but not as far fetched as it seems. These weren’t just the madcap evangelicals we love to loathe and lampoon Later ..read more
