We are delighted to announce that Her Late Majesty The Queen approved the nomination of The Very Reverend Dr David Monteith, Dean of Leicester, for election as Dean of Canterbury. David has overseen significant development and growth at Leicester, enabling the cathedral to become ‘a beating heart’ for one of the most diverse cities and counties in England. For the first time since the Coronavirus pandemic, Canterbury Cathedral will resume free evening entry to its Precincts grounds. Beginning Wednesday 10 August 2022, between 17.00 and 21.00 daily, individuals and families will be able to enjoy free access for a quiet walk through the beautiful green spaces of the South Side Precincts of this stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Very Reverend Dr Jane Hedges was installed as a Residentiary Canon at Canterbury Cathedral by The Rt Revd Rose Hudson-Wilkin, Bishop of Dover, on Monday 20 June 2022. The installation, which took place during Choral Evensong, allows Jane to take up the role of Acting Dean of Canterbury (who must be a Residentiary Canon) and to carry out the duties associated with the post. The process of appointing a new Dean is currently underway, following the retirement of The Very Revd Dr Robert Willis. A new Dean will be appointed later this year. The next round of lifeline funding for cathedral heritage crafts is announced, which will help secure the future of English cathedrals. The Hamish Ogston Foundation and The Cathedral’s Workshop Fellowship (CWF) have announced the latest round of funding to support heritage craft training through the CWF. Adrian Bawtree has been appointed as Rochester Cathedral’s new Director of Music and Organist. Adrian is currently Second Assistant Organist at Canterbury Cathedral and will take up his prestigious new role from September 2022. On Sunday 3 April 2022, The Mail On Sunday published an article regarding a small number of zero-hour contract roles offered at Canterbury Cathedral Lodge. The original article did not include the Cathedral’s statement regarding these contracts, or details of our staff pay rise which came into effect on 1 April 2022.
