The season is off to a good start with two pavement rides - including the Spring Fling this past week where there were as many tutus as there were sandhill cranes! Though cool outdoors, it's been good to get out on the bikes with friends. We were definitely optimistic when we created the schedule during breakup, but the cool, cloudy, days means the dirt trails are still too wet for our rides. So, we have a schedule change: Next week's ride was to be at Kincaid Park. Instead, we'll have a pavement ride beginning at Goose Lake Park and ride an abbreviated "Moose Loop" to include Chester Creek Tr ..read more

Russian Jack bridge. The calendar and the migrating birds say it's spring but we're still waiting for snow to clear from sections of the paved trails in town. Last weekend, the Ship Creek Trail was clear except for an icy tunnel, while the Coastal Trail and Chester Creek still had areas of snow. It is melting fast, but it sure doesn't seem that way. We're hoping that our first ride of the season on Wednesday, May 10, will give us clear trails! Be sure to sign up so we know you're coming. Meanwhile, we've already had two events. The Meet & Greet in late April was a chance to see ..read more

The riding season has heated up and each ride has felt dryer, dustier, and hotter than the last. We were talking about the heat after Wednesday's Kincaid ride and how 70 degrees here in Anchorage feels much hotter than in the Lower-48. Long daylight hours, the angle of the sun - this article in the Alaska Beacon touches on some of the reasons. It also talks about the impact the current conditions have on our bodies. Not only is it hot and dry, but we also have had wildfire smoke originating in or drifting into Anchorage. I could smell it while riding at Kincaid, but not until I had been riding ..read more

Winter days and nights

I love when people post up winter rides on the Meetup page. First my brain says: "ooh, I really should do that," and then it might say "but it's cold and dark out and you work tomorrow." I might follow the temperatures and then just say: "you have the gear; now charge that light and bundle up because you need to ride with the girls!" And that is usually the best answer. While the number of holiday season gatherings I attend has shrunk to near zero, I especially miss the Solstice rides we used to do, so when Gloria posted a ride for December 19, I made sure my light was charged! Just four of us ..read more

It has been over a month since we had our last official ride of the season, a ride on sometimes snowy trails in 40-degree temperatures in Far North Bicentennial Park and the Campbell Tract. Unusual conditions during this uncertain time, but with good friends who enjoyed every moment of a beautiful fall evening that also looked like winter. Michele and Maggi enjoy a crisp evening. When the organizers made the decision to delay the start of the scheduled rides this year, we hoped that our community would have a higher vaccination rate by early July. It was not to be, yet we pedaled on a ..read more

Hello Divas. We have a few news bits for you this week. Singletrack Advocates (STA) has resumed work on the Hemlock Burn Trail in Chugach State Park. The trail is not yet open to riders, but we can help this happen in a couple of ways:     Donation: It takes funding to build awesome trails and one of our missions is to support trail building and maintenance in Southcentral Alaska. We'll be making a $2,000 donation to STA this week to help complete this trail this summer... so that we can ride it!     Sweat of the brow: STA will be announcing trail work sessions in ..read more
