Every year it humbles me even more. In just a few hours, we enter into the most sacred three days of all time: the Holy Triduum. We will attend the Mass of the Lord’s Supper – the founding of all our feasts and of all our hope of salvation.  We will follow Christ to His agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, then climb Mount Calvary and be witnesses to His execution. And we will keep vigil at the sealed tomb.  In his final years, Pope St. John Paul II wrote: “In the Easter Triduum, we will fix our gaze more intensely on the face of Christ, a face of suffering and agony, that helps us un ..read more

CV NEWS FEED // The beautiful and dramatic veneration of the Cross that Catholics celebrate on Good Friday is a tradition the Church owes to St. Helena, Empress and mother of Constantine, to whom is attributed the discovery of the Cross of Jesus. In the Liturgical Arts Journal, Prof. Shawn Tribe writes that the veneration of the Cross is a good occasion “to give some consideration to St. Helena, Empress and mother of Constantine, as well as to the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme in Rome.”   “The former because it is to her that tradition attaches the finding of the Cross and ..read more

The icon of the “The Harrowing of Hades,” sometimes called the “Anastasis,” depicts Jesus on Holy Saturday when he broke open the gates of hell and rescued the Holy Souls who had been awaiting their redeemer. The rich symbolism of iconography serves to catechize the faithful on deeper truths of their faith through images. The central figure of the icon is Christ. He triumphantly descends into Hell to retrieve the faithful who have died before his coming. He stands upon the broken gates of Hell that have been cracked apart and torn open.  Christ is flanked on either side by Adam and Eve w ..read more

Dan Fitzpatrick, a former Catholic elementary school principal who blogs about how Catholic parents and educators can help children grow in their faith, wrote that, like the character Jan in the TV show The Brady Bunch, Holy Thursday doesn’t get the attention, respect and love that it deserves. “It is obvious why Holy Thursday takes a back row in people’s minds as compared to Easter, since this final, third part of the Triduum commemorates ..read more
