I have written a few articles on this website on the subject of meniscus tears. In this article I want to more focus on the golfer and his/her meniscus tear. There is not much by way of research specific to meniscus tears in golfers. Most of the literature surrounding the knee in golfers relates to how fast can I play after knee replacement and “will I be better than before because my knee is fixed?” You can read that article here: Playing golf after a knee replacement Must I have surgery to play golf again?  For some people the answer maybe yes, for some people maybe no. For many years doctors have speculated that a weak neck or cervical spine instability could be at the root of a long list of non-responsive neurologic, psychological, and cardiovascular symptoms. More specifically symptoms of depression, anxiety, cognitive problems and memory loss, hallucinations, fainting, the sensation of seasickness, dizziness, vertigo, hearing problems, vision problems, swallowing, digestive problems including chronic nausea, numbness, headaches, muscle wasting, breathing problems, to name but just a few may be traced to neck problems. Barre-Lieou Syndrome is an often confusing, misdiagnosed and misunderstood cause of a vast array of neurologic based symptoms.  Barre-Lieou Syndrome  is named for the collective, yet independent work of Jean Alexandre Barre, M.D. who published his research in 1925 and Yong-Choen Lieou, MD who published his findings in 1928. Each doctor wrote of patients displaying unexplainable symptoms  of headache, pain and swelling on one side of the face, tinnitus, vertigo and dizziness, nausea, vomiting and other digestive distress, vision problems, radiculopathy type symptoms of neck, shou ..read more

In this article I would like to discuss some of the symptoms of C1 – C7  herniation or nerve compression. While this type of problem in patients can be the result of many things, this article will focus on degenerative wear and tear of the cervical spine and scoliosis. Sometimes I will see a patient who has neck pain. They will also have symptoms consistent with radiculopathy or more commonly, a pinched nerve. These symptoms would include a burning pain that would travel down the nerves from the neck through the shoulders and down the arm into the fingers. They will also often have headac ..read more

Do painkillers reduce testosterone levels in men?

by Marc Darrow, MD., JD

Marc Darrow MD,JD I see a number of patients who have advancing osteoarthritis but who are too young for joint replacement. Basically, they are being managed for joint pain until they are old enough for joint replacement. At the same time, they are losing hormones, gaining weight, and losing mobility. Typically, they have lower levels of activity, chronic pain, are becoming obese, and are on pain medications. They are, clearly, in a poor healing milieu.  In our office we have seen many men who had a long history of opioid usage and display signs of low testosterone levels including, but n ..read more

A group of Canadian doctors wrote in a July 2022 study (1) of the “complex relationship” between a patient’s pre-operative expectations of their spinal surgery, if those pre-surgery expectations were met, post-surgical outcomes, and satisfaction after spine surgery to help determine, what is a successful spinal surgery. This study was conducted as a Canadian national study of patients undergoing elective surgery for degenerative spinal conditions Fifty-eight percent of patients were extremely satisfied, and 3% were extremely dissatisfied. Pre-surgery outcome expectations were variable and gen ..read more

Marc Darrow MD,JD We have seen many patients over the years with problem elbows. We see some whose problems have extended beyond a tennis or golfer’s elbow problem, into one of osteoarthritis, and a recommendation for an elbow replacement surgery. Elbow replacement surgery is certainly not as popular as knee, hip and shoulder replacement, but it is performed and by the acknowledgement of surgeons, it is a tricky surgery. As the elbow is a hinged joint similar to the knee, elbow osteoarthritis share many of the same characteristics and treatment suggestions that someone with knee osteoarthritis ..read more

Anxiety and depression in chronic back pain
Darrow Stem Cell Institute

Research has recognized that the anxiety that low back pain patients suffer from was influenced by the intensity of the pain they had, the level of disability it was causing level, and the  subsequent feeling of helplessness that back pain can spiral the patient into.  These factors were summarized in a November 2022 paper (1)  which suggested: “Quality of life is a very important outcome of low back pain patients, which is affected by multiple dimensions, primarily mobility, followed by anxiety or depression. . . The patients who have chronic musculoskeletal pain combined with ..read more
