Bering & Wells at ClexaCon – The Queer TV Reunion of the Decade

In a time before out queer characters on mainstream media, or rather on the cusp of such TV representation, was Bering & Wells – the bisexual couple that almost was. I remember the moment Jaime Murray’s character, Helena G. Wells, said within earshot of Joanne Kelly’s character, Agent Bering, the indelible line “Many of my lovers were men” and the coy smirk that earned from Agent Bering. Those few seconds of air time was the most confirmation my then lesbian college heart had ever received I was not alone. Attending a religious college in the Bible Belt of Texas as an out lesbian had me co ..read more

We are so thrilled to be attending ClexaCon for the third year since its inception! This convention for queer women in media has come to mean so much to us, not just as cosplayers and frequent convention attendees, but in our personal lives as well. Our member, Dorian, came out as Trans-masculine through the inclusive trans & non-binary meetup, which you can read about in Coming Out as Trans-masculine Through Cosplay & ClexaCon. We are actively preparing our cosplays and panel materials for Exploring Gender Through Cosplay at ClexaCon2019! Along with working on our swimsuit bodies for ..read more

Quarantine Crafting

Wow! What a beginning to a decade, huh? Like many of you I imagine, we kept busy during quarantine and the multiple governmental shutdowns in response to the COVID-19 pandemic by crafting (or playing Animal Crossing). It barely kept us sane and gave us something to work on. At the end of the day, having a physical manifestation of accomplishment was invaluable in battling depression. So, what did we make? Read on and see! Face Masks We became a mask factory for the first month of the shutdown. Fortunately, we collect fabric. It is a vice and we are working on it, but in this particular case i ..read more

Con-Jikan really snuck up on me this year. I am grateful that I was able to get a media pass as late as I applied. As someone who works with PR professionals on a daily basis, I admit I felt bad hitting that close to a press deadline. But the team behind Con-Jikan is the most collaborative convention staff I’ve ever had the pleasure of interacting with. As I have said in previous blogs, this anime convention was a passion project by a bunch of college students at the time of its inception. They described it best this weekend as a ‘grassroots’ convention. This group has come together every year ..read more

There has been a lot of buzz around Albuquerque’s newest comic convention and we are gonna give you the inside scoop on how its inaugural year went. But before I go any further, we want to take a moment to thank all of the incredible staff and volunteers that made New Mexico Comic Expo even possible. We saw all of the hard work that went into this con, and we can never thank you enough for bringing a breath of fresh air to the Albuquerque convention scene. Albuquerque has long been due for some fresh blood in the nerd industry and New Mexico Comic Expo (NMCE) really brought their A-game. N ..read more

A Disappointing Day for Cosplay & Comics in the Duke City

As a rule, I have never attended Duke City Comic Con. We had a guest blogger cover it in Comics in the Duke City, but we have never (ourselves) attended. We have, however, sworn off the two other of TriCon’s Conventions for reasons which are laid out in We Attended a Highly Controversial Comic Convention and This is How it Went. It was of no surprise then that the day before the official start of the convention an updated story by the podcast Nerd & Tie broke regarding this convention and the alleged registered sex offender that heads up security at this and the other conventions by the sa ..read more

One detriment to this convention for the working cosplayer is that it starts on Friday during which they have consistently been adding more panels. For many conventions Friday is a preview day with minor programming if any for those that are free to kick off the weekend, but rarely are there main stage panels. This year (unfortunate for everyone with a day job) the majority of the cosplay panels were on Friday, save for two. I cannot speak to how many people were in attendance at those panels on Friday as I have a job, but knowing as many local cosplayers as I do with day jobs I do not imagine ..read more
