The lovely critical text from my exhibition, following your words, an Homage to Giacinto Scelsi, at the Scelsi Foundation in Rome, Italy, by Irmela Heimbächer. Barbara Schaefer- Multi disciplinary Artist Article by Penelope MacEwen (MA Fine Art Oxford University/ Psychology Uel Postgrad, UK.) Footfalls of memory, the eons of time open chasms as their depth is revealed: continuing cyclically; resuming the wheels of fate. When the volcano at Pompeii opened her heart, the people were engulfed. Even slaves and their masters were equalized. We reflect now upon the year that has passed as we tried to reach out to others yet were physically locked down. Schaefer, as one single artist depicts herself; yet she infers the many, as they seek contact across cyb ..read more

https://nyartistscircle.com/artists/barbara-schaefer/album/533 to see the work MacEwen refers to in her article. Inhabiting spaces - the ghosts of memories that haunt us - there is a sense of previous lives permeating and pervading Schaefer’s images. We get the idea of a journey in which nostalgia meets the grittiness of real life and tears may meet with joy as well as with sadness. The sense of loss is most felt when looking at the images of empty spaces, particularly in her photographic work where the history and back streets of Rome are most prevalent. The ‘vanishing quality’ that Schaefer ..read more

I occasionally apply to juried shows that don’t charge fees to submit. Charging fees is often primarily a money making scheme for the organization and not necessarily beneficial for artists. Also, artists provide thousands of non-artists with jobs, yet more non-artists make more money from art than artists. Last year I applied to a show in Hong Kong about “identity” that didn’t charge fees. I was drawn to the concept of “identity,” which is an ongoing topic in Continuum Movement, a practice I’ve been doing for almost 20 years. However, the requirements of the show were specifically about ident ..read more

I was born and raised in Buffalo. I couldn't wait to leave and once I left - immediately after high school - I've never missed it. In 2000 I returned for a class reunion, reconnected with a few old friends, re-discovered the city and made peace with my past. I used to have a reoccuring nightmare, which took place in the house where I grew up. It was a handsome, large English Tudor house with ivy growing up its brick walls, semi-circular driveway and a backyard with swings and a tetherball court. I loved tetherball and was good at it. As a child the house was sometimes an overwhelming, scary ..read more
