This selection of photographs made using alternative processes and techniques was drawn from the booths at Paris Photo 2023. For further background on how and why this “collection” was formed, and the structure of the resulting slideshow, visit the introductory page (here). This collection consists of 20 works featuring alternative processes and techniques made between roughly 1930 and the present. There were so many worthy options for inclusion in this collection that another 10 or even 20 works could easily been added without sacrificing much in the way of quality, but the curatorial limits ..read more

This selection of works by Black photographers was drawn from the booths at Paris Photo 2023. For further background on how and why this “collection” was formed, and the structure of the resulting slideshow, visit the introductory page (here). This collection consists of 20 works made by Black photographers between roughly 1950 and the present. The competition to join this group was fierce (signaling a growing momentum for works by Black photographers at fairs like this one), with works by Gordon Parks, Carrie Mae Weems, Deana Lawson, Seydou Keïta, Arielle Bobb-Willis, Ming Smith, Renee Cox ..read more

Photography Highlights from Paris Photo 2023 – An Introduction to Four “Collections”

In the decade or so that I have been visiting the Paris Photo art fair, I have tried plenty of different approaches to sifting through the contents of its many booths. Over the years, I have selected one work from each and every booth, limited myself to just works made by women photographers, and simply chosen a selection of notable highlights, all in the hopes that I might provide a sense of the offerings at the fair for those unable to attend. This year, I decided to return to my roots and once again force myself to really think like ... Read more at Collector Daily ..read more

Photography Highlights from the ADAA Art Show 2023

The photographic pickings at this year’s ADAA Art Show were decidedly slim, with just a handful of booths showing photography either in part or in full. But the quality was consistently solid, and part of the charm of this fair is its unhurried conservatism, where year after year a mood of reserved engagement can be relied upon to appear. Even when the most risk-taking contemporary work is tossed into this mix, the hushed surroundings seem to temper the flash with a dose of refinement and gravitas. What follows below is a (very) brief survey of the photography highlights at this ... Read more ..read more

Highlights from 2023 PHOTOFAIRS New York

It isn’t often that a new photography-centric art fair decides to dive into the maelstrom of the New York art fair circuit. After the breakdown of the partnership between Paris Photo and AIPAD, New York has been left without a contemporary focused look at the medium – contemporary photography is of course on view at plenty of contemporary art fairs in the city throughout the year, but photographs are often less prominently featured in these fairs (as was the case at the recent Armory Show, here). With AIPAD’s fair limiting its exhibitors to association members (and seemingly trending a bit ..read more

Photography Highlights from the 2023 Armory Show

If there is an overly simple conclusion to be drawn from the sparse scattering of photography on view in the booths at this year’s Armory Show in New York, it is that contemporary gallery owners must think that they can’t sell much photography right now. A nearly endless sea of paintings filled the 200+ booths at the Javits Center this past weekend, with just three photography specialists devoting their booths to the medium (Bruce Silverstein, Edwynn Houk, and Yancey Richardson) and only small pockets of photography to be found elsewhere here and there. And when photography was present, there ..read more

Photography Highlights from the 2023 Frieze New York Art Fair

For committed photography collectors like ourselves, the run of spring contemporary art fairs here in New York can often feel a little like a frustrating missed opportunity. We enthusiastically look forward to the fairs, and then proceed to systematically work our way through the aisles, eager to visit with gallery owners (and other collectors and curators) from far off locales and to get caught up with the photography they are supporting. And yet, more often than not, the reality is that when we do arrive to see what they’ve brought, they’ve largely left the photography home, in favor of big ..read more

Highlights from the 2023 AIPAD Photography Show, Part 1 of 2

As I walked in yesterday to attend this year’s AIPAD Photography Show, I was reminded of a small personal anniversary. I first visited this fair 15 years ago now, and aside from the interruptions of the pandemic years, I have consistently reported on what I have found at the fair over that entire period. At roughly 45 booths this year, hosted in a Midtown space on 5th Avenue (for the second year in a row), the AIPAD fair seems to be in an ebbing, transitional moment, where the tumults of the pandemic years and ongoing changes in tastes and interests ...
