The International Center of Photography (ICP) will reopen on January 25 in its new 40,000 square foot space at Essex Crossing, a residential, retail and office complex on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The move allows ICP to consolidate its museum space and photography school for the first time since 2016, when the museum moved to temporary space on the Bowery and the school remained in Midtown. According to real estate news and property records, ICP paid $29 million for its space at Essex Crossing, located at 79 Essex Street. Property records also show Essex Crossing’s developers bought ICP’s o ..read more

Determining how to price and edition your fine-art prints can be difficult, especially for emerging photographers. Fortunately, there is plenty of information available that can help photographers make informed decisions, as we explain in “Tips for Editioning and Pricing Fine-Art Photographs.” For most photographers, the best approach to fine-art print pricing is to ask experts, and observe how other photographers set prices on their editions.
When commercial photographer Reuben Wu decided to sell his personal projects as editioned prints, he consulted gallery directors. “I said: Here’s my ..read more

Elinor Carucci’s photographs offer an intimate, unvarnished view of family life. In her books Closer and Mother, Carucci has shown the ups and downs of marriage and motherhood, earning widespread praise and some criticism, as well, for exposing her family to public scrutiny. In a recent talk at the PDN’s 30 Creator’s Lounge at PhotoPlus 2019, Carucci discussed her new book, Midlife; the difference between photographing her family and photographing on assignment; and how she will decide which images of her twin children to show—now that they are teenagers.

In a lively conversation at the PDN’s 30 Creators’ Lounge at PHOTOPLUS, photographers Sara Macel and Danna Singer discussed how they established their fine-art careers. They shared lessons they have learned about sharing their work with collectors and editors, approaching strangers to make photos and handling rejection.
Macel showed three projects and explained what each has taught her. For her first, “Kiss and Tell,” she interviewed strangers about their early sexual encounters, and then photographed the places where the encounters occurred or places that represented some part of their r ..read more

In our recent story called “Fine Art Careers: McNair Evans Learns the Value of Patience (and a Business Plan)” the San Francisco-based fine-art photographer describes how raised money to publish his first book, and how he got exposure for his work early in his career.
Shortly after earning a photography degree in 2011, Evans created a zine featuring ten images from his first project, called “Confessions for a Son.” He then applied to Review Santa Fe. “At that stage of your career, portfolio reviews are important,” Evans says. At Review Santa Fe, Evans won the Curator’s Choice Award for his ..read more

In our story “How to Sell Prints Without a Gallery,” several photographers explain how they manage to sell prints of their most popular images. These include a commercial photographer who has sold open-edition prints to earn extra income, and a fine-art photographer who, having no gallery, sells director to collectors. One of the big challenges is fulfilling orders: packing and shipping prints is a lot of work. Many photographers leave those chores to their photo lab. But photographer Sara Macel takes a DIY approach instead.
Macel tells her buyers that once she has received payment via PayP ..read more

When we recently interviewed past PDN’s 30 photographers for a story about how they sustain their careers and adapt to change, several talked about the importance of their work routines and planning habits. Inspiration, they said, doesn’t come in a flash. It takes work and practice. Here is how photographers Zun Lee and Elinor Carucci described their process to stay creative.
Zun Lee: Creativity isn’t some esoteric thing that “happens” (same with “inspiration”), it’s a process you have to work on and commit to every single day. Getting up at around the same time every day, regardless of wh ..read more

U.S. collectors, photographers and photo enthusiasts who have longingly watched highlights of the annual Paris Photo art fair on social media from afar won’t have to fly to Paris next year to get a taste of what they’ve been missing. According to an announcement from Reed Exhibitions, Paris Photo New York is coming to New York City in April 2020, co-presented by the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD). The event will be held at Pier 94, and will take the place of The Photography Show Presented by AIPAD, the annual fair many had come to know simply as “AIPAD.”

In addition to launching a special edition Leica M Monochrome, the musician Lenny Kravitz is also exhibiting some of his photographic work at the Leica Gallery in Wetzlar, Germany.
Leica has released a selection of the work so you can take a look for yourself from the comfort of wherever it is you are at the moment.
The photo series, which is on display now, was inspired by Kravitz’s nomadic lifestyle. It features “intimate portraits, laconic snapshots, carefully observed scenes from the street and well-composed moments in hotel rooms, all captured during his time on the road,” accordin ..read more
