One of my favorite sayings is “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.”
This advice is great any year, but especially in 2020. If there’s something in your life that is serving you, take a moment to recognize it and celebrate it. Then, find ways to keep it going.
But what if something that’s working is fixin’ to break?
That’s the situation I found myself in as I started thinking about the approaching cold weather. Two daily rituals have been keeping me grounded during this time of social distance: my morning walks with Colbie and hanging out on the deck for meals and happy hours with Jay and the kid ..read more

Are you staring down a completely overwhelming organizing project or a never-ending to-do list? If so, keep reading. Just ahead is a simple way to tackle all of your big and overwhelming projects 30 minutes at a time. (That already feels better, doesn’t it?)
Here’s the back story.
The other morning my husband shared an idea that motivates him to check more items off of his ever-growing to-do list. The idea was inspired by the ESPN documentary series 30 For 30. Jay’s remake of this idea is 30 Under 30 (which isn’t to be confused with a list Forbes puts together each year.)
So what’s Jay’s 30 u ..read more

As I’m sifting through a pile of paperwork today, this catchy little phrase keeps running through my head.
Gosh, isn’t that the truth? But sometimes keeping up simply isn’t an option. There’s just too much coming at you and too many must-do tasks on your to-do list to actually keep up. Other times, however, keeping up is just a whole bunch of tiny choices everyday. Choices like:
Going through today’s mail and doing the associated tasks, like scheduling bills for payment and filing away the coupons. (Clearly, I haven’t been making that choice as of late, haha.)
Doing the dishes and cleaning u ..read more

An organized closet is an essential part of living a more organized and simpler life. When your closet is filled with clothing that reflects your lifestyle and sense of style and is organized in a way that works for you, getting dressed is an easy and enjoyable process. As I was scrolling through my Instagram feed this week, I heard my one of my mom’s “momisms” in my head. Stop wishing your life away, I heard her say.
She’d pull out this phrase of wisdom when I was going through a tough spot and just wanted to be on the other side of it. I can’t wait until spring break or I can’t wait until this semester is over, would ultimately be met with stop wishing your life away.
While I think mom’s main aim was to get me to stop complaining, now that I’m older I think she was onto something. If I’m constantly wishing for the next thing, I’m in essence wishing my life ..read more

Happy Monday my friends! It’s the third Monday of the year, which means it’s quite possible that your enthusiasm for your New Year’s goals and resolutions is starting to fade.
Do I have that right?
If so, you’re not alone. Allstate even has a TV spot about broken resolutions.
This past week I’ve given a lot of thought as to why this happens. My enthusiasm has started to wane a bit, too, because my plan hasn’t been going…well…as planned. Last week I had a stomach virus. And in the last few weeks we’ve had unexpected car repairs (on more than one car, ugh) and now one of those cars is completely ..read more

I believe one of the biggest reasons people get discouraged with goals and resolutions is due to unrealistic expectations about time. If you have unrealistic expectations about how much you can accomplish in set amount of time, it’s a surefire recipe for discouragement and frustration.
What’s worse, if you don’t recognize that the true issue is unrealistic expectations about time, you may begin to apply negative labels to yourself such as I’m lazy or I never achieve my goals. And that feels awful. It’s no wonder we all want to throw in the towel on our resolutions in less than a week’s time!

I’ve always been a fan of setting New Year’s resolutions. It’s in my DNA. There’s something about a fresh start that’s simply irresistible to me. This year, however, I’ve been feeling an even bigger pull than usual to tap into the energy and possibilities the new year offers.
Why is this year different? It’s a combination of a few things.
I have a BIG birthday approaching this year…like a freight train. I want to meet that birthday feeling happy and excited, with the right mindset to begin the next decade of my life.

I’m always amused by the abundance of storage containers on the shelves of major retailers right after the holidays. Sure, from a business perspective it makes sense to capitalize on the January urge to get organized, but if you’re someone with “get organized” at the top of your New Year’s resolution list then it’s important to know that buying a container isn’t your ticket to destination organization.
Here are two questions to ask before buying containers:
What do I need to store? If you can’t specifically answer this question while standing in the container isle, then you’re not ready to b ..read more

The start of a New Year is a natural time to make a fresh start. But how do you avoid the resolution trap, where you start with great enthusiasm only to find your motivation waning after just a few weeks? Here’s a simple plan you can use to create a fresh start and stay motivated along the way.
Make a list of goals. Start by writing a quick list of what you want. Don’t worry if your list feels more like a to-do list at the start. Getting those mundane tasks out of your head will help you get to the heart of what you really want — your true goals. It can help when setting goals to think about t ..read more
