The End of An Era
Ride The Tempo
by Tiana Feng
4y ago
Hi, I feel like it’s been a long time coming for the past two years, but I have made the sad decision to end the publishing of Ride the Tempo as of December 2019. This isn’t a decision I make lightly as it’s been such a big part of my life in the past 13 years or so. I’ve been making websites since I was 12 in some capacity and music blogging since I was 17 or 18. If any weirdos have followed me for that long you will remember that before Ride the Tempo, I had a personal blog that died in the great Blogspot music blog purge of 2010. From the ashes this site was born, in a super ugly iteration ..read more

Premiere: [LISTEN] Gelax – Mr. Square
Ride The Tempo
by Nicholas Cooper
4y ago
“Dedicated to all douche-bags, chauvinistic, egotistical, condescending, power-greedy men, hiding behind empty gestures and fake promises to the women they attempt to deceive.” Channeling degrading experiences into a miraculously powerful confrontation against fictitious and sexist behavior, Gelax pull out impressionistic energizing punches in this bone-chilling critique of fantasy rock, flips the tables over on “Mr. Square”. Dark and heated overtones spread across the song, with surreptitious licks and tingling chords on guitar and ominous smooth looping bass / drum machine, arranged and util ..read more

Fredericton angular art punk trio Motherhood place their energetically bold and stylish mania of an instrumental piece, #224, within a geometric art show of a music video, featuring edgy entrancing drag queen Freeda Whales striking posses while painters brush cubic shapes in the background. The track itself has a momentous enduring resonance, a modern-day equivalent to Rush’s ‘YYZ’, with its rhythmically exciting harmonic grooves, omnipresent sustained drone sirens, grungy daring dirty guitar tones, and a breathing structure corridor that the trio generously exposes and uniquely transitions us ..read more

[WATCH] L CON – Believe
Ride The Tempo
by Nicholas Cooper
4y ago
L CON shows how hiding the struggles and confrontation of your inner fears for some people is much like applying and wearing clown makeup in her music video for ‘Believe’: you can act like nothing is wrong, but it clearly shows beyond the mask. This electronic avant-pop soliloquy has its heart and soul in the lyrics sung, as L CON works through her thoughts, to believe in herself of being unafraid and strong, to one day break free of the disguise that is put on, to finally move on and be herself again. We see this scenario build across the video, as well as reflected in slow building musical t ..read more

Hold My Hand Spaceman narrates an impressionistic journey of the superseded entanglement of the lands of realities and dreams with their impressive instrumental progressive metal. A wavering duality of energies guilds the coarse of this sonic journey in flight and slumber. [WATCH] The Waverlys – Dark River
Ride The Tempo
by Nicholas Cooper

Alternative-folk duo The Waverlys tame the tremendous rapids as phantasmal outlines within spirited fluid light spectrums in the music video to their electric-rocker “Dark River”. Combating the sinful demons of the raging river means you have to get courageous, and Charlotte Moore belts out charged vocals, clearly articulate with brusque passion, to brave the journey. Kevin Myles Wilson delivers energizing accompaniment to assist in the passage, including meticulous rhythmical electric guitar riffs and full splashing drums. In the video, The Waverlys perform as silhouettes amongst effervescent ..read more

[LISTEN] Faunts – There Will Be Blood
Ride The Tempo
by Nicholas Cooper

Hope is unforgettable and ever-present, even when it casts itself into recess and hibernation. A flood of cathartic bliss, weightlessness and joy floods within us when it returns. Such is the unexpected yet brilliant revelation of ‘There Will Be Blood’ by Edmonton electronica post-rock sages Faunts. Mystic rippling serene vocals thread and cross like tender ribbons in the wind, talking of understanding and time. They float through these uplifting currents of compassion and promise above sci-fi pastoral expansions and depth-defying synthesizers, acoustic/electric guitars and percussion. Chisele ..read more
