[Advertisement – this is a paid partnership with Carl Hansen & Søn, but all words and opinions are my own] It’s that time of year when many of us start to think about getting our gardens, terraces or balconies ready for the warmer months ahead, and today I’m excited to share some inspiration for minimalist outdoor furniture in collaboration with Carl Hansen & Søn. Our garden is very much a work in progress, but it’s fairly quiet for a city location and, as it faces south-west, it catches the sun for most of the day. It’s also something of a mini wildlife haven, and the resident birds ..read more

Despite a brief return to sleet and snow last week, spring has arrived here in Bristol – and that means it’s time for my seasonal round-up of the best scented candles. For me candles aren’t just a winter thing, and I love selecting fragrances that suit my mood and the season. Around now I start swapping the smoky, spicy notes that I tend to favour during the colder months for lighter scents that breath a bit of freshness into the house. I’ve picked out 21 of the best below, encompassing old favourites alongside some new discoveries for 2024. The ever-increasing array of candles on the m ..read more

Chris and I have just got back from an impromptu minibreak on Cornwall’s south coast – a beautiful landscape of tidal creeks, secluded coves, wooded valleys and windswept headlands that we always enjoy visiting. I’ve added some new finds from the trip to my existing posts about the area, but today I’m sharing an in-depth look at a place that’s become a firm Cornish favourite for both of us: the Lost Gardens of Heligan, located near the fishing village of Mevagissey, a few miles from St Austell. Formerly the estate of the Tremayne family, Heligan’s sprawling gardens fell into disrepair after ..read more

Several of my favourite design names have just released details of their spring-summer 2024 collections and one in particular immediately caught my eye: that of Danish brand &Tradition, which is known for its mix of timeless Scandinavian pieces and contemporary creations by a raft of international designers. I was particularly excited to see that its latest additions include a few relaunched classics, among them the ‘AX’ chair. Created in 1950 by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen of Copenhagen-based firm Hvidt & Mølgaard, it was one of the first examples of laminated veneer furni ..read more

21 of the best marble coffee & side tables

Marble is a perennial favourite of mine – a timeless, durable and surprisingly versatile material that never looks tired. So, for my latest ‘best of’ round-up, I thought I’d update the selection of marble coffee and side tables that I originally shared a few years ago. Marble is often thought of as glamorous and decadent, but it works brilliantly in minimalist schemes. It looks particularly striking when paired with clean-lined, contemporary design, and it can be offset with all sorts of other surfaces to create an elegant note of contrast. Of course it’s rarely cheap, and the below sel ..read more

7 stylish places to stay in Portugal’s Douro Valley

It’s time for the final instalment in my series rounding up the stylish accommodation options in Portugal that I came across while planning and researching last year’s 10-day road trip through the country with a friend. I’ve already covered the best places to stay in the eastern Algarve, the rural Alentejo region and the coastal resort of Comporta, and today it’s the turn of the Douro Valley – our penultimate stop before we ended our journey in Porto. This was actually my second time in the Douro Valley, having spent a few days there with my husband back in 2015, but I was more than happy to ..read more

Happy New Year! I hope you’re having a good January so far. It’s a gloomy, rain-soaked day here in Bristol, so for my first post of 2024 I’m sharing a bit of escapism with a peek at Sjöparken – a beautiful new hotel concept with calming, minimalist design, set amid the undulating fields of Ästad Vineyard in Halland, western Sweden. Designed by Norm Architects, Sjöparken consists of seven villas with four guest suites apiece, clustered around a lake at the heart of the estate. The emphasis throughout is very much on the natural landscape, with understated architecture that blurs the boundarie ..read more

A minimalist Christmas table in earthy neutral tones

I’m about to sign off for the festive break, but before I do I want to share a peek at this year’s Christmas table styling. I’m hosting this time around, so I wanted to create a magical tablescape that’s still in keeping with my minimalist style and neutral decor. As with the decorations in the rest of the house, I’ve gone for a nature-inspired look using earthy beiges and browns, with a bit of added sparkle and a dusting of snowy white. For the centrepiece, I’ve used a flower frog to create an ikebana-style arrangement that ties in with the fireplace display in the living room. There are sp ..read more
