As I sit down to begin writing this article, the calendar catches my eye, and I realize that the holidays are fast approaching. I smile at the realization because I remember my parents talking about how the holidays rolled around faster the older they got. I’m beginning to understand! Ready or not, the holidays will be here before you know it. Just saying that out loud can stir up all kinds of emotions. Typically, from a young age, it has been ingrained in us how the holidays are supposed to unfold. As the holidays approach, we know the traditions we hold dear and look forward to the people w ..read more

The Other Part of Grief

On a recent road trip, I found myself singing along to songs from Les Miserables. One song, in particular, has stuck in my mind the way some songs do, for better or worse. I’m happy to report that this one is for the better. I think! I catch myself singing snippets of it in the shower. It’s the song going through my head when I wake up. The song is sung by Jean Valjean at a critical point in his life, one of those crossroads moments, if you will. Having an important decision to make, Jean Valjean sings “Who Am I?” as he does some soul-searching to make his decision. It’s not so bad that “Who ..read more

I could tell it was a book the moment I held the wrapped gift in my hand. My niece watched as I opened her gift, carefully gauging my reaction. The book, One Question a Day, is a five-year journal asking a different question each day with space to record answers. I was delighted with the book, but my niece’s explanation for the gift caught me a bit off guard. She said she had given me the book because she would be going through my things one day and thought it would be a fun read! As much as I was caught off guard, I knew she meant no harm, and we had a good laugh. I assured her that I apprec ..read more

Somewhere during my adventures in reading, I came across a line that spoke to me so strongly that I wrote it down, knowing that I would revisit it one day. Today is that day, and I want to share the line and a few of my thoughts! Pico Iyer is a British-born essayist and novelist known for his travel writings. The quote is his: “We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next to find ourselves.” While Mr. Iyer writes from a travel perspective, my connection with the quote comes from a completely different perspective. I understand the travel perspective, and travel certainly comes ..read more

Thanks to a thoughtful idea from a patient’s daughter, Regina Giles, prayer shawls will travel to patients in style. Regina Giles and her mother drop off the first part of their Thirty-One bag donation. Wanting to honor her father, Regina, a Director with Thirty-One Gifts, appealed to friends and family to help her donate “Blessing Bags,” bags that would hold the prayer shawls for Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House patients and help families carry home their belonging. Those at the Hospice House receiving a prayer shawl will be given their shawl in a new “Thirty-One” bag. Just when I think there is no place to put another one, let alone need another one, I am caught off guard with the sight of land being cleared and signage indicating that, yes, coming soon is another storage facility! With each new storage structure, the buildings get bigger and better! Inside storage, outside storage, drive-up storage, and climate-controlled storage are only a few options available when considering solutions for a storage need. While driving in a very remote area, I recently rounded a curve in the road and saw the sign EXTRA STUFF STORAGE at a large storage facility entrance ..read more
