Doors Open Days is Scotland’s largest free festival that celebrates heritage and the built environment.  It offers free access to over a thousand venues across the country throughout September, every year.  The aim of Doors Open Days is to ensure that Scotland’s built heritage, new and old, is made accessible to people living and visiting the country on weekends in September.   We’re delighted to be part of the 30th anniversary this September and excited to welcome people from across Edinburgh and the Lothians into the Hospice. St Columba’s Hospice becomes the first hospice in the UK to achieve Playlist for Life accreditation! Playlist for Life representatives Andy Lowdes, Deputy Chair and Paula Bain, Business Manager, visited the team at St Columba’s Hospice to give them official accreditation as a Playlist for Life establishment. Hospice patients and Primary School children discuss death and dying through songwriting

St Columba’s Hospice and Edinburgh-based charity Fischy Music have been working together on an innovative project to help hospice patients and children from Victoria Primary School explore issues around death and dying. The children have been meeting with patients in the hospice to discuss the impact of life-limiting conditions, explore thoughts and feelings through the arts and to write songs that can be shared with the rest of the school, the hospice and the wider community.  The project culminated in an exhibition outlining the creative process with a performance of the finished songs ..read more

Hospice trials new virtual reality experience to help patients in pain

Residents of the Hospice are the first palliative care patients in Scotland to experience the stunning effects of virtual reality in an exciting new university research project. The interactive initiative, which can virtually transport patients to locations on the other side of the world, will look at the impact of virtual reality (VR) on patients’ health and wellbeing.
