By Kathy Schrenk The beginning or end of any significant trail is a big deal. It’s arbitrary in some ways, but like the arbitrary beginning of a new year or a birthday, it invites contemplation. As my big backpacking trip was less than three weeks away, I decided to start thinking seriously about trail safety and how to stay alive. Shortly into my research I realized, hiking might be a little more dangerous than most people expect.
