Calf Strain (1yr) with significant scar tissue. Are my backpacking days over?

Hey reddit, I M(30) am currently in physical therapy for concurrent calf strains, the first of which I got about a year ago and have reinjured many times over the course of that process. The other strain came about due to overcompensation. When I massage the area I can feel a significant amount of scar tissue in my left calf as I run my hands over its surface. I miss hiking and backpacking every single day of my life. As I begin to recover and reconcile that my health and mobility are never going to be the same, I find myself wondering if there are others who have had a similar experience and ..read more

What sleeping bag combination for temperatures 0-60 degrees fahrenheit

Currently, I use a cheap synthetic bag that is not optimal for backpacking. I live in the upper midwest and backpack year round and experience night-time temps between 0 and 60 degrees. I want to fit this range of temps without buying 3 sleeping bags as some have recommended. Ideally, I want to just have two sleeping bags or possibly a bag and quilt combo. I use a 5r inflatable sleeping pad all year. My ideal sleeping bag has a full-length zipper and is not an ultra tight mummy bag. Recently I ordered a north face green kazoo 0 degree but it had a half length zipper which was very annoying. I ..read more

Cluster camping - opinions on the trail?

I’m fairly newer to backcountry camping and so far am loving the experiences I’ve had. I recently hiked at Frontenac Provincial Park and our campsite was really close to a few others. Is this common in provincial parks? Do you generally enjoy camping and meeting others neighbouring your campsites or is it more normal to ignore the others on the trail? What is the camping etiquette here?? Friendly wave? Are we besties now?? Ignore and look away?? submitted by /u/pipherbird [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Not as ultralight as some people would like, but it's impossible to go lighter than this ?. Not in the picture are the first aid, spare lights and batteries alongside the crew gear that we all share and bring along. submitted by /u/DrWwevox [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Alaska advice: 1-2 night hikes around Denali (or wherever within reason of Anchorage)

Considering a trip to Alaska this summer in early july. The original plan was for Banff, but all the hiking permits are doled out it seems (for any of the trails people write blogs about... anyway). So, looking in to Alaska... Doesn't seem like the travel time or costs are really any different, anyway. One thing that I seem to have trouble finding would be marked-trail overnight hikes. It seems like the overnight hikes there are true wilderness hikes. Is that the case? Should I just find a regular campground for a night or two just for the sake of getting in a tent (and saving some cash...) a ..read more
