We have lived through another rollercoaster year in 2021! Waves of the virus roll over us and then recede and then seem to come back once more – who knows what the future will hold. Optimistically, we hope that this round of the virus will be less severe than those before and that we can return to a sense of normality soon. We wish you all Happy Holidays! We hope you enjoy your Christmas break with your families and loved ones ..read more

The influence of ward layout on everyday communications between healthcare workers: an evidence based study

The importance of communication for healthcare workers within a hospital ward has always been huge. And, as a recent BBC TV News report about the night shift at the Royal London Hospital in the middle of the COVID pandemic peak shows, in times like this communication is even more important not only to exchange patient information, but also to show solidarity, to go to someone and say that they’ve done a great job. The aim of this blog post is to generate greater insight ..read more

Designing a Campus for Students and their Wellbeing. Part 2 – Communal Spaces

brainybirdz are sometimes commissioned to write articles and blogs for other organisations. This is a re-post of a blog written for Milliken earlier this month, where we argue for a different approach towards campus design. In our last blog post we discussed lecture theatres and the need to rethink the spatial design of campuses to provide settings suited to student needs, but also to evolving pedagogy and teaching delivery. But it is not just the constraint caused by lecture theatres that might impact student learning and wellbeing on campus. The topic we turn to today is the design of commun ..read more

Designing a campus for students and their wellbeing. Part 1 – The Lecture Theatre

brainybirdz are sometimes commissioned to write articles and blogs for other organisations. This is a re-post of a blog written for Milliken earlier this month, where we argue for a different approach towards campus design. A university campus is not just a workplace for academic and professional services staff, but also the daily ‘workplace’ for thousands of students. How university buildings are designed has a major impact on how spaces are used, and this in turn can affect the wellbeing, sense of belonging and learning success of students. In this short series of two blog posts, we want to ..read more

Reaching out this holiday season

So much has been said already about this challenging year. We started blogging back in April about the impact of the lack of informal face to face social contact with colleagues that working from home was bringing. We have worked with clients in these last months without meeting them, except via Zoom, and relying on sad video walk throughs of empty office spaces. Last week we started to talk about what we would do for a Christmas e-card this year and we realised that, although we may be brainybirdz, we are also people who have missed making rounded, human connections with those we know and wor ..read more

The future of the workplace: looking forward by looking back

I have always been almost pathologically averse to futurology. It’s that smug certainty about the way the world will be that often grates. And right now the ‘future of the office’ is drawing us all in to becoming another of those who claim special insight. However, I have taken heart from listening to Professor Lynda Gratton at Worktech20UKEMEA this week, who welcomed the influx of people now talking about the future of work as the means by which the conversation will evolve and lead to any change. Before I heard Lynda Gratton speak, I had already started to write this blog, in what I describe ..read more

Communicative Spaces. A New Way to Measure Workplace Effectiveness in Hospital Wards and Co-Working Spaces – PART 2

In my previous blog post of this two-part series, I talked about the importance of face-to-face communication in hospital wards for exchange of information and socialisation and the development of a new single measure – SCI (Spaces for Communication Index). SCI measures space effectiveness in the form of maximising communication opportunities which is crucial for good healthcare outcomes and can be applied to dynamic environments. In this blog post I will talk about co-working spaces where communication and collaboration is equally important and explore what the SCI measure can tell us about t ..read more

While many people are currently working from home because of Covid-19, it seems an important time to remember the value of socialisation face to face in the physical workplace and how that relates to organisational performance. In this blog, I talk about how my PhD research into workplace effectiveness in hospital settings, led me to identify a spatial design index (SCI) that predicts care outcomes. Whilst effectiveness of hospital settings is of course also an area of interest in the current crisis, my research was conducted back in 2018, pre Covid-19, and what I want to talk about here is ho ..read more

Balancing competing objectives when planning a return to the office

Recently, Devi Sridhar, professor of global public health at the University of Edinburgh, said “The question of whether it is safe to open is clearly a political one and seems to be driven by economic and social imperatives rather than public health.” Leaving politics aside, what this statement highlights neatly is that the Government is currently attempting to balance three competing objectives: public health; economic performance; and social needs. We think most organisation leaders are facing the same balancing act when planning a return to the office. In an earlier blog we talked about som ..read more

Amongst all the comment that already exists out there about the impact of Covid-19 on office design and what office life will therefore be like in the future, I guess there hasn’t been so much written by those people who are actually having to make recommendations for their own organisations. I also guess that this is because they are far too busy working it out for real and are having to grapple with all the uncertainty and all the competing views from within their own organisations in the process. I am not one of those people, but we at brainybirdz have been asked to assist clients we know a ..read more
