2021 is here, and like the rest of us, you're no doubt staying safe indoors social distancing, but that means you're probably missing out on critical vitamin D like never before. If you’re experiencing shifts in your mood, an overall sense of malaise, or disruption to your sleep cycle, the pandemic may not be the only thing to blame. A phenomenon known as Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, may be the cause. Much like the name suggests, during seasons when we don’t get enough sunshine we turn, well, sad. At Verilux we know a thing or two about using artificial light to help get you back on tr ..read more

Self-Care Tips For Isolation During The Holidays
Verilux - HappyLight Therapy
by Jessica Badeaux

By now it’s clear: We’re going to remain isolated (at least somewhat) through the holiday season. With full and partial lockdowns persisting and most public activities still restricted (even the new James Bond film got pushed back again!), we’re probably looking at a few more months at home. Isolation may be the “new normal,” but to most of us it will never actually feel normal (or comfortable). And it may be particularly trying during the holidays, when we're used to spending more time with friends and family. If you could use a little bit of a boost though, or some help with self-care during ..read more

Tips For Going Back to School Remotely
Verilux - HappyLight Therapy
by Lene Baxter

This year has been a bit strange. OK, maybe a lot strange.. and going back to school doesn't necessarily mean the same thing this fall. So, while having a great set up at home for studying was important before, it's even more so now. Here are a few things that won't break the bank, but are definitely worth getting to make your study space the best space. HappyLight Ideally, you're soaking up that sunshine in the first part of your day, but the reality of studying and being a student doesn't always mean that's possible. You might have class (in person, or virtual), or you might just need a litt ..read more

My Story: Making the Most of Virtual Classes

My first experience with remote learning was not because of a global pandemic. I was living abroad and my Masters degree program was located in the U.S. (my spanish level wasn’t...and still isn’t at the level to do an advanced degree). In some ways, it was strange. My academic life until that point had been in-person and I really loved the in-person interaction that I got from it. It definitely took a little adjusting, but once I got into a rhythm, I enjoyed it (though being at home comes with it’s own distractions→ Hello Netflix!). Here are a few things that really helped me out: Stay Connect ..read more

The One Goal I Set That Changed My Entire Life
Verilux - HappyLight Therapy
by Lene Baxter

It's one many seem to overlook. My name is Natasha Nurse, and the goal that changed my life was choosing to be happy. This seems like an obvious goal that everyone should have, but sadly, it is not the case. So many people are unhappy in the United States (especially in New York). It was December 2015, and I was told I was losing my job. When this happens to most people, the first thing they want to do is panic. For me, I saw an opportunity to live my life in a whole new way. I decided to live by the following six principles: Commit to my life motto: meet someone new and learn something new ..read more

Feel like time is flying? Here’s how to slow it down.

Easy tricks can make good days feel longer. Sometimes it seems as if life is passing us by. When we are children, time ambles by, with endless car journeys and summer holidays which seem to last forever. But as adults, time seems to speed up at a frightening rate, with Christmas and birthdays arriving more quickly every year. But perhaps it doesn’t need to feel this way. Our experience of time is flexible, speeding up in some situations and slowing down in others. There are even some altered states of consciousness (such as under the influence of psychedelic drugs, in traumatic situations, or ..read more

Verilux - HappyLight Therapy

All physiological functions — from muscle function, metabolism and joint lubrication, to the maintenance of a healthy gastrointestinal tract, glowing skin and shiny hair — require adequate water. Your water bottle may be one of the lightest things you lift during a workout, but it’s also one of the most important. As an active woman, you bust your butt in the gym, working up a sweat to boost your health and your fitness – and your water levels can make or break your performance. “Being well hydrated makes you feel better and function better athletically,” says Michael Bergeron, PhD, FACSM, ex ..read more

How Much Time Should You Spend In The Sun To Get Vitamin D
Verilux - HappyLight Therapy

Extract the maximum from the summer without feeling the burn. The advent of summer, in theory at least, brings with it the glory of sun-filled days filled with barbecues, trips to the seaside and all manner of other enjoyable outdoor pursuits. It seems churlish to dampen any enthusiasm for that time spent in the sunshine, but as with almost everything, there are health concerns to consider. Chief among which is the time-honoured battle between your vitamin D requirements and the risk of skin cancer. To make sure you’re getting the balance right, here’s Dr Stephanie Munn, consultant dermatologi ..read more

How to Enjoy Summer Without Breaking the Bank
Verilux - HappyLight Therapy
by Lene Baxter

Summer is one of my favorite months as I love basking in the sun and enjoying the energy of the city. Where I live in Portland, Oregon, it's rainy and dreary for nearly nine months of the year. But thankfully, summertime is right around the corner, and for these three months, the weather is absolutely perfect. The sun is shining, the weather is warm, and the energy of the city is completely different — it feels vibrant and alive. In years past, I've noticed my spending increases significantly in the summer. I want to be out and about and will pay the price for it. Luckily, I've found some fru ..read more

Develop a Morning Routine That’ll Stick
Verilux - HappyLight Therapy

Every morning I wake up at 5:27. I read for 17 minutes, perform my ablutions (13 minutes flat), then meditate until 6:43 when I break four raw eggs into a blender with two strips of bacon, blend for 33 seconds, and chug in eight. By 6:50 I’m ready to face the day—and I’m sure most of you, mere mortals, are still asleep. Or maybe not. Your morning routine is what you regularly do when you wake up. For most people, that’s getting out of bed, having breakfast, getting dressed, brushing your teeth, and heading into work. There is, however, a productivity movement driven by people like Tim Ferriss ..read more
