A new take on the Y Series SB with the ABV down to 10.5% and no mention of skin or lees contact. Winemaker is Heather Fraser. Yalumba, The Y Series, Sauvignon Blanc, South Australia, 2023 Pale lemon hue with green edges. Funky and out there nose. Smoky pink grapefruit and campfire ash with tinned mango, black currant, chalk, fresh mown grass, passionfruit pulp and orange blossom. Carries flesh that sits heavy early before tucking into puckering, zesty, teeth aching acidity. It still has quality fruit, just missing the whole picture of previous releases that were a little more seamless. RRP ..read more

In a world where most Riesling is underpriced and great value, some stand out even further. Wild ferment and vegan friendly. Winemaker is Sam Wigan. Yalumba are rolling across to the 2023, but there will be plenty of this out there. Yalumba, The Y Series, Riesling, South Australia, 2022 Very pale lemon hue with green highlights. Fragrant and fun. Lime drop lolly confectionary over lime juice and zest, hints of bittersweet grapefruit, floral citrus blossom with edges of chalk and a kiss of musk. Vibrant, a little generous up front for immediate appeal, yet driving acidity for cutting through y ..read more

Wild fermented and Vegan friendly, if that’s important to you. Classy labels on the Y Series Reds. Fruit from all over SA as Yalumba and Hill-Smith Family Vineyards have access to quality sites across the state. Winemaker is Alexey Alon Dumbuay. Yalumba, The Y Series, Merlot, South Australia, 2021 Medium garnet with a bright ruby edge in colour. Atractive and bright nose: Blue fruits and a little lavender. Some dark cherry, tobacco, chocolate and blood plum. Strikes the right balance between perky and fleshy. Fruit is bright, tannins are present and just supple. No great length, but plenty of ..read more

Wild fermented and Vegan friendly. Yalumba have access to some great Cabernet fruit, so no surprises on quality for price here. Braille on the label is also a nice touch (get it?). Winemaker is Alexey Alon Dumbuay. Yalumba, The Y Series, Cabernet Sauvignon, South Australia, 2021 Goodness, there’s a lot of Cabernet for the price. Big chunky varietal blackberry and cassis. Cool onyx stone, soft choc mint, campfire ash/earth and a touch of sweet charry oak influence.  Smooth and sapid on the palate with the right amount of well priced puckering tannins under that house of shiny black fruit ..read more

100% wild ferment.  Approximately 50% of the blend fermented and matured in new French oak (around 15% of the final blend) and the rest 1 to 3 year old barriques, the remainder in stainless steel. Winemaker is Alexey Alon Dumbuay. Hill-Smith Estate, Chardonnay, Eden Valley, 2022 Pale lemon to straw hue. A little flinty struck match over lemon juice, fig, toasted almonds, warming butter, white stone fruit and nuance of white stones. Neatly worked formulae for modern interpretation of Australian Chardonnay. Toasty oak framework giving a vanilla kiss and supporting fleshy stone fruit with a ..read more

One of my favourite wines from the Hill-Smith Family Estates stable, and now they’ve gone and done the cellaring for you. Considering the current release is only $5 cheaper, I’m not sure how the accountants are happy…but you can be when you buy it. mesh, Classic Release, Riesling, Eden Valley, 2016 Only just starting to deepen in colour, such is the capability of the screw cap closure to ensure a wines integrity. Developing nose of rich lime sorbet, a touch of moth balls/TDN, wax, soft baked biscuit and a little ‘yellow box’ honey over the still-punchy citrus and florals that this would have ..read more

One of my favourite wines to review. The story goes that Jeffrey Grosset and Robert Hill-Smith were contemplating buying the same vineyard at the same time, but instead of outbidding one another, they joined forces. The mesh marketing team take it from here: “Clare Valley’s Jeffrey Grosset and Eden Valley’s Robert Hill-Smith work together each vintage before taking their chosen grapes – Jeffrey’s in the blue buckets and Robert’s in the yellow – and parting ways to crush and ferment the fruit at different locations. Debate follows, as the juice is assessed and the final, final, final blend is a ..read more
