Off-tour: The Hidden History of Williamsburg.

On the 13th of October 2023, I took possession of a newly renovated, one-bedroom flat on the ground floor of a diverse complex in Williamsburg, Virginia. My neighbours are of all ages, colours, and languages. The children play outside my patio window, and the space under the stairs outside my door is their preferred parking garage. The proper bike racks around the development are well-used, but they are exposed to the weather. Christmas and Epiphany have come and gone, and I find myself in Lent still moving in. But I have already found many new friends: in the choir at Saint Martin’s and the W ..read more

2023 Tour: the Islands, the Cape and a Hurricane.

Welcome back! Last month, I stopped blogging to focus on the thirty-day, one-thousand-kilometre bicycle tour that included three islands, a detour to dodge Hurricane Lee, and no camping. We had never left the tent and equipment behind, and having the weight on our bicycles reduced by half was only one positive experience of the tour. On the 1st of September, we checked into the HI Hostel in Truro. It occupies a former Coast Guard station in the Cape Cod National Seashore. The HI Truro has a weird schedule: July through Labor Day. This is because the facility hosts two semesters of a university ..read more

2023 Tour: Cape May and Cape Cod

Welcome back! It’s been almost exactly six months since I signed off after returning from Italy. I expected big changes in 2023, and the fates have not disappointed. Both Emily Is Hard to Kill and Art to Die For have been published. I went to my first book fair in Norfolk in June and added direct sales to my offer. Now I can sell books directly, and offer signed first editions to my readers. Click here for more info. All winter I looked for a new living arrangement. Much as I liked the Pembroke Towers and my neighbours, the rent was too high to allow me to rent a pied-à-terre in Italy. It ..read more

2023 Italia: In the land of Circe and Odysseus

Rain lashes the balcony windows of my flat in Norfolk as a near-freezing nor’easter pommels Tidewater. Winter coughs up its last gasps before giving up for the year. I sit at my workstation, beating out my recollections of the three months I spent in Italy. My mind and my heart go back to a different balcony window, where the towering peak of Circe’s Island glows in the setting sun. Every day for two months, I sat in almost the exact physical arrangement as I am now. The desk chair here is a little softer, but the feeling is the same. Let’s wrap up that trip. Settled in Sabaudia at the end of ..read more

While I am settled in central Italy planning the next move, I invite you to read the stories of my two heroes, before Emily met Hilda. They were awesome women before they met, each in her way. This is how they got there. I will post the stories in chronological order, which I hope you enjoy. Go to my author’s blog. Smooth roads and tailwinds,  JT   ..read more

Sure, it’s not 2023 yet, but I expect this tour to take us into the new year. I also intend for 2023 to be a year of important changes, whether to my travelling, the publication and distribution of my books, or surprising life changes. Join me for the adventure! Adventures often don’t go well. Depending on one’s attitude and surviving the setbacks, adventures can provide fodder for cocktail party conversation or long-lasting personal embarrassment. I prefer to laugh at my misadventures. Both Cheryl and I deal with many obstacles that airline ground personnel inflict on bicycle travellers. For ..read more

2022 Tour: Cape Cod and the Islands

On the morning of the 30th of August, I awoke to find this email waiting for me: I have fond memories of Martha’s Vineyard. I love that place and it is great for bikes. Forget the campground … A 2-week [trip] would be nice in Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard. There was that place we stayed in Provincetown that was like a hostel and very reasonable in price. There is also an HI hostel in Hyannis. Could take passenger ferry from Boston to Provincetown with bike, ride to Hyannis then ferry to Martha’s Vineyard BC and ride to hostel and day rides on Martha’s Vineyard. What do you think?  Cheryl ..read more
