Addressing White Supremicist Violence with Our Kids
Our Family Coalition
by Pauly Pagenhart

When traumatic events happen, our jobs as parents and caregivers become profoundly challenging. Because the event impacts both us and our children. We feel compelled to do the impossible: make sense of the senseless, and to help children feel safe, when our faith in their safety in the world – and our ability to control that – is shaken to the root. Violent white supremacy has been a threat to our children long before the Buffalo and Laguna Hills massacres this past weekend. It is integral to the founding of the nation; its relentless and systemic iterations underpin and continue to power our ..read more

Postpartum Group Starting Up In January

Parenthood in the early months and years is notoriously isolating and time-consuming–at a time when a person needs community more than ever. In short order you need to understand how to care for a person whose life is quite literally in your hands. For those whose parenthood begins with the birth of a baby, that little one whose life depends on you is utterly incapable of communicating to you other than wordlessly, by crying, or wincing, or smiling (and that only after weeks and weeks). New parents have to find a way to become capable of suddenly holding this awesome responsibility, with or wi ..read more

SFUSD needs to hear from LGBTQ+ families who want a Queer/Trans Parent Advisory Council
Our Family Coalition
by Krystal Dawn Peak

San Francisco Unified School District could soon be the first in the nation to solicit guidance from an LGBTQ-centered parent advisory council–if a motion is adopted by the Board on December 13th. The idea for the Queer Transgender Parent Advisory Council (or QTPAC), in the works for years, is now on the brink of fruition, thanks to the of work of Rick Oculto, OFC’s Education Manager and parent activist and OFC community member Mari Villaluna. The resolution to create this advisory council was introduced by Board Member (and past OFC Night Out honoree) Allison Collins earlier this month, as a ..read more

This fall’s run of the popular parent ed series is starting on the first of December 2021, and running for 12 Wednesdays (with a few holiday breaks) through to the end of February 2022. We’ve been offering the Triple P: Positive Parenting Program annually for more than a half a dozen years, and over that time scores of OFC parents have found it to make a huge difference in their parenting. Some 162, to be exact. The Triple P – Positive Parenting Program began over 20 years ago at the University of Queensland, in Australia, by early childhood psychology specialists. Each year it is refined and ..read more

CA Adoption Conference 2021: Nov 5 – 6
Our Family Coalition

A huge proportion of us have built our families through adoption. We’re four times more likely than our non-queer counterparts to be raising adoptive children, and six times more likely to foster children (UCLA’s Williams Institute, 2013). So not surprisingly, OFC has been a part of the California Adoption Conference for most of its years, as either as co-planners, promotional partners, and as speakers. The California Adoption Conference is an annual gathering for for prospective adoptive parents, first/birth parents, as well as adoption professionals, educators and extended family members–ha ..read more

I didn’t know queer history growing up.

When LGBTQ+ History month was first celebrated in 1994 it was a very different world for us. The number one rated show in the United States was Seinfeld; Ace of Base, All-4-One, and Boyz II Men were at the top of the charts for music; the box office hit at the theatres was The Lion King, followed at a very distant second by Forrest Gump. This was before Will & Grace and right after Pedro Zamora graced us with his presence as an openly gay participant in the Real World. It was 21 years after the DSM removed homosexuality as a disorder and Matthew Shephard still had 4 more years to live. Bil ..read more

It’s a list of lists! And more. This time of year we get a lot of emails from our community. Sending your little one out of your home, at any age, is scary. Most of us have worked hard to create a beautiful, affirming bubble around our loved ones. OFC kid nailing hopscotch, Berkeley, CA. It’s hard to keep that bubble intact, hard to know the best way to prepare our kids, even without a global pandemic. Do we prepare them for the worst before it’s happened? Hope for the best, lest we plant dread in our kids? Or maybe zig-zag in between? No answer to these questions is easy, and the w ..read more

Mental Health, Wellness, and Community Support
Our Family Coalition
by Mimi Demissew

This summer, mental wellness has finally bubbled up into the mainstream conversation after the very public decisions of two major athletes – Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka – to withdraw from public competitions to address their mental health.  If Biles and Osaka are brave enough to prioritize their mental health over major industry accomplishments in the prime of their careers, every organization should be factoring mental health into the overall wellness of their employees and communities. We are seeing exhaustion and burnout in our LGBTQ+ community as well as the organizations that serve ..read more

Reopening… mindfully
Our Family Coalition
by OFC Admin

For OFC, “mindful” reopening means that we’re adding back programs on a gradual basis, as we manage the challenges and maximize the opportunities inherent in our in-person events. We’re also figuring out what might–or perhaps even should–remain virtual-only, or even virtual-optional (aka “hybrid”). We’re also reflecting on what we’re learning from our Community Needs Assessment around what our community needs now. We’ve learned a lot from it, and want to learn more! If you haven’t filled it out this 5-minute survey, please do! We’re also doing a second round of Focus G ..read more
