Why Do Kids Suck So Bad at Losing?

I played in my local Beer League hockey Championship game for the first time the other night. We’ve had a good team for several years but had never made it to the Big Game. We did not win. It sucked. We played well, made a great comeback at the end of the game, went to overtime, and then lost on a tricky puck that somehow found its way behind the goal line. The other team rushed out onto the ice to celebrate as our crew head to the benches, collected our gear, and dejectedly went to the bleachers to change. It was a crappy feeling to lose like that. And then, after a couple minutes, I got over ..read more

Let’s talk about running. Everybody seems to be running these days, and good for them. When I drive around the streets, I see untold numbers of people running. I see young people, older people, I even see kids, just running. I see them in the morning, I see them in the evening, I even saw them at midnight coming back from my hockey game. Just, running. And that just sucks. I hate running. Always have. Always will. I was a good runner, even in the Army. But I hated it. Then I got out of the Army, and I hated it even more. If someone wasn’t going to pay me to run, then why the hell would I run f ..read more

What Do You Want to be When You Grow Up?

My daughter and I were having a pleasant evening in the backyard the other night when she peeked over to see me playing a baseball game on my phone. She was very intrigued and watched for a few moments before telling me that she wanted to be a baseball player one day and play for her favorite team, our local minor league affiliate, RiverCats. Then, after a brief pause, she completely upended me by asking: “Daddy, what do you want to be when you grow up?” I have never been so flummoxed by a question in all my life. A four and a half year old had left me absolutely stumped. What do I want to be ..read more

The People You Didn’t Know you Didn’t Know

Here is something no one ever tells you when you are going to have a child: You are going to meet people. Like, a shit ton of people. You are going to meet all sorts of people you never thought you would meet in your lifetime, all because you have a kid. For some, that can be a problem. Not every person is open and outgoing. For others, it can be exciting because now you have an open avenue to possibly meeting new friends for life. And then there are others who just like a casual acquaintance to help pass the time while their child is playing or dancing or swimming or whatnot. For myself, this ..read more

Women to watch for in the Sports World

Having a daughter, it is important that she is able to find and identify girls or woman, like her, who figure prominently in her world. One of the easiest ways for her to do this is through entertainment, such as film. So it is no coincidence that on International Woman’s Day, March 8th, the new movie Captain Marvel came out. The first Marvel comic book movie fronted by a female Superhero debuts to the world (although the excellent DC film Wonder Woman already had Marvel beat by almost two years in releasing a female superhero, so nah nah nah nah nah nah). And while she may be a little young f ..read more

Welp, the Super Bowl has come and gone, which means one thing: baseball is next! However, there is still some griping to do from Sunday. No, it isn’t about how horrid the game was or that TB12 got another ring or that BB cheats, blah blah blah. Nope, this is a parenting blog and the Pats winning means nothing to parents. What I want to discuss is my newfound disdain for network television and the garbage being put on it in front of my daughter. Two things stuck out to me last night whilst watching said suckfest of a game. One is that network TV no longer has any type of filter, even when it co ..read more

An Ode to the Ultimate DB

For three years now, there has been one constant in my life: the diaper bag (or DB for short). I have spent more time stressing out about the DB than any other facet of my life. Did I forget to put it in the car? Do I have enough diapers? Did I add more baby wipes? Did I put extra juice in there? Why are all the extra clothes still 18M? Why does this smell when I open the zipper? This expired how longer ago? Oh yea, nothing quite like exploring the inner sanctum of the diaper bag after a few months of neglect. Yup, nevermind the kid. The diaper bag is the most important component of being a pa ..read more

Good afternoon folks from smokey California. These fires here in California have demonstrated the urgency in making sure one is prepared in the event of an emergency. Having spent a long time in and around the military, I am fully aware of the ramifications of not being prepared. It is easy, however, to get complacent and think that a bad day will never arrive for your own homestead. These fires have shown that it no longer matters where you live, whether it be in the mountains, in the ‘burbs, or on Hollywoodland’s luxurious hillsides. If fire or mother nature wants to get you, it will find a ..read more

It is that time of year again. The weather is getting cooler, the leaves are changing color, and the cries of children’s laughter have turned into cries of death-defying screams as kids are being pushed out of moving vehicles en route to the schoolhouse. I’m pretty sure I witnessed a 9 year old conduct a perfect PLF as his mom shoved him out the door, without even slowing down for the lady holding up the Stop Sign in the cross-walk. Yes, school season has arrived (unless you live in Arizona or California, where it arrived like a month ago). A time of great celebration for many. For many, that ..read more

What the Hell? A Serial Curser’s Perspective on Cursing in Front of Kids

I curse like a sailor, which is weird because I was in the Army. I make no bones about it, I swear and I swear constantly. I tried not swearing once. Didn’t take. It’s just how I talk. If you ask my wife, once I get rolling in a conversation with like-minded adults, the F bomb will come out about as often as the word THE. Trying to not swear is like trying not to use E in a sentence. In my team rooms swearing was habitual. On the range it is all too common to throw out phrases like “Hey F*&kstick” when trying to get the attention of someone about to commit a catastrophic failure, or shouti ..read more
