This was originally posted by the Marion & Polk Early Learning Hub here. One of the Early Learning Hub’s Core Messages is this: Parenting can sometimes be overwhelming. Balancing the demands of work, childcare, financial and emotional stress, may be all you think you can handle. There’s another part to it, but we’ll get to that later. I’d like to focus on this first part right now as it is extremely prevalent in our lives at the moment. You see I am in the middle of day four of my recovery from an appendectomy. I was sick for a couple of days with a nagging abdominal pain last week in the ..read more

I started writing this at 1:30 in the morning…so if there are errors and it doesn’t make any sense you can just blame that fact…kidding…sort of!  I’m supposed to be sleeping right now and trying to recover from my recent surgery.  If you didn’t catch from my less than clever play on words in the title I had my appendix removed recently.  It didn’t burst, thankfully.  In fact, in the words of my Father-in-love (term coined by my awesome Mother-in-love i.e. Mother-in-law) my appendix was “angry but wasn’t throwing a tantrum.”  I’m very grateful for the doctors and nurses who treated me well and ..read more

Working From Home

I have spent a decent amount of time thinking and dreaming about the possibility of working from home.  I think quite a few of us have!  The idea of setting your own schedule and earning a living to support a family while not having to get out of your pajamas most days sound pretty amazing to me.  Of course it isn’t easy to make happen and does require plenty of actual “work” as well, but I do think it is possible and in this age of technology seems to be getting more and more possible.  It has definitely become a dream of mine as I have continued to write and blog and as I’ve established my L ..read more

This was originally posted by the Marion & Polk Early Learning Hub here. This may be surprising to hear, but I like to write. I know…I know it’s crazy right. A blogger who likes to write? Well, it’s true. I enjoy trying to make my thoughts and ideas come together to create a story or narrative that hopefully someone else can read and feel connected to. It is one of the best ways that I can express my feelings and thoughts and offers me a bit of catharsis. This may be why one of my longest-running traditions with my wife and my kids is writing them letters. It began with me deciding to writ ..read more

This was originally posted by the Marion & Polk Early Learning Hub here. “Don’t blink!” They say…“before you know it, he’ll be graduating high school!” Well…he may not quite be there yet, but tomorrow my son heads off to “Kinder Camp” for a week to learn a little bit about his new school before he goes for real in about a month. We’re definitely feeling a mix of emotions in our house, but the feeling I feel the most right now is pride. This isn’t a pride that is selfish or a pride that is trying to inspire jealousy. I’m proud of my son for the boy he is becoming and for the journey it took ..read more

I’m a people-pleaser.  I’m a peacemaker.  I like everyone I interact with to be happy and to think I’m a good person.  I don’t like to rock the boat.  I don’t like confrontation.  I don’t like to make people mad or upset.  I especially dislike disappointing people.  My greatest fears seem to be the triumvirate of hurting, disappointing or angering other people.  I second-guess myself all the time in this regard…”Did I say something wrong?  Did I look at them wrong?  Did I make the right decision?  Do they like me?” While I have lived with this for most of my life I would say that the last two ..read more

This was originally posted by the Marion & Polk Early Learning Hub here. Ahh…summer. The perfect time for vacations, laying by the pool, exploring new places and…learning? Wait, schools are on break…we shouldn’t have to worry about kids learning during the summer right? Actually, summer is a great time to keep the learning going because unfortunately a lot of progress that is made during the school year can be lost if we don’t keep encouraging our little ones to keep their brains active during the summer months. And while it may be tougher to encourage our kids to read all day when it’s su ..read more
