The Center for Aquaculture Technologies Canada has launched a tenacibaculosis model to assist farms in combating growing disease challenges In 2023, the Norwegian salmon industry experienced the loss of 62.7 million Atlantic salmon before they reached market size, marking an increase in mortality by 6 million salmon from the previous year. A plan for a large salmon farm on the US East Coast is hanging in the balance following a controversial decision by the local city council. Nordic Aquafarms has been trying for years to build the $500 million facility near the town of Belfast, Maine. Nordic Aqua Partners has announced the successful completion of its first commercial harvest of Atlantic salmon produced at its facility in Gaotang, eastern China. The company described the achievement as a major operational milestone for Nordic Aqua which would now be introducing the Nordic PureAtlantic brand to the growing Chinese market. European Union salmon processors are demanding that Norway calls an end to the ban on exporting “prod” or damaged fish. The joint call, has come from the EU Salmon Processors Union which includes key countries such as Poland, Denmark and the Netherlands. The Norwegian authorities, and much of its salmon industry, is so far resisting the demands. The Union has described the situation as “facing a crucial challenge that affects us all, and it is high time we take collective action”. Norwegian salmon prices hit new record

Fresh salmon prices hit an all time record in Norway last week, although there are signs the surge could be over. They soared to NOK 123.28 per kilo during week 15, an increase of NOK 3.34 per kilo or 2.2% on the previous week. The official figures from Statistics Norway are generally an average so some fish could be higher while other smaller salmon may be below that level. The trend continued upward, but later reports indicate prices are starting to come back down. Mowi Scotland Q1 30% higher, but global output down

Mowi Scotland produced an encouragingly higher harvest during the first three months of this year, a trading update today shows. The output between January and March from the division, which has suffered from biological and other issues in the past, totalled 14,500 tonnes against 11,000 tonnes a year earlier – a rise of 3,500 tonnes – or an increase of more than 30%. The Scotland operational EBIT per kilo, however, was down from 2.45 euros last year to €2.20 euros this time.
