National Parks at Night Blog

We all love being in the field to shoot, but we all also know that opening the shutter is only half the task of creating a great photograph. The other half is processing. To help with that second half, National Parks at Night periodically offers online post-processing workshops, and today we’re excited to announce the next rounds of those. Moreover, not only are we announcing new sessions for two popular courses we’ve run in the past, but we’re also launching two brand new courses! The two returning courses are Lightroom Live and Photoshop Live, both of which lead attendees through the basics ..read more

Everybody loves a clear night sky. It can be existential to feel the draw of an endless dome of stars, take in a brilliant Milky Way or be fortunate enough to catch a dazzling display of northern lights. Across the globe, photographers and non-photographers alike marvel at the magic of the night. What then do we do when clouds move into our star-filled nights? Give up and go home? Heck no. We can change our approach. Embrace the clouds! They can be every bit as magical as the Milky Way or a display of auroras. Faroe Islands. Even More Words: Updates to the Night Photography Glossary
National Parks at Night Blog
by Chris Nicholson

In January 2022 we released an e-book titled The Night Photography Glossary. It’s a reference guide to over 250 terms about night photography, along with over 80 images to illustrate. Our hope was that the glossary would be a fun educational tool that would also help unify and standardize many of the terms that all us night photographers use to describe the many crazy things we do. We also intended the glossary to be a living document, adding to it as updates seemed appropriate, or as our niche developed new techniques and adopted new fascinations. To that end, we recently added 25 terms, and ..read more

It’s that time again. The year is winding down, wrapping up, and we look back on all of the things we did that we are proud of, and perhaps the things we didn’t do or places we didn’t go that are still on the bucket list. It’s a big world out there, with so many dark places to explore! Soon, as we turn the final calendar page, we’ll look ahead to the new year full of promise and opportunity, and of the many images waiting to be made. Here at National Parks at Night, we have a tradition of looking back at a year’s worth of photos and picking our favorites to share. This also gives us a moment t ..read more

National Parks at Night Blog

At the end of this past week, fall faded and winter began. Well, that happened in the Northern Hemisphere, anyway. In the Southern, tans are starting. But regardless of your orientation to the equator, we’re all soon heading into a new year. With that new year will come a fresh slate of night photography experiences, including opportunities to interact with like-minded photographers. For exactly that purpose, we run two annual events: the Night Photo Summit and the Nightscaper Photo Conference. Each are unique in the ways you can be inspired and engaged, and we’ll soon be officially launching ..read more

Autumn is ending, and as the trees shed their leaves (or, if they’re far enough south, their iguanas), seasonal thoughts once again turn to holidays and perfect gifts for the special photographer in your life. Once again, we’d like to help. As we’ve been raking our leaves and lizards, we’ve also been compiling a list of gift ideas for night owls such as yourself. We’ve been writing about those gifts, and we’ve been putting those words into what you’ll find below: our eighth annual Holiday Gift Guide. In it you’ll find ideas from camera companies, memory brands, scouting apps and more—all to he ..read more

Guiding the Light: Our Friend Improves Luxli LED Panels
National Parks at Night Blog
by Lance Keimig

Since the moment they were created and released, we have been quite partial to the Luxli Fiddle and Viola LED light panels, for both light painting and Low-Level Lighting. We feel that Luxli panels are the tools that offer the most precise control over added lighting for the type of night photography that we do. However, until recently, that precision was mostly about the brightness and color temperature of the illumination. Photographers also need to be able to control light diffusion and spill. Originally Luxli provided a means for the former, in the form of diffusion screens that spread the ..read more

To 100 and Beyond: A Centuple Celebration of 8 Years of Workshops
National Parks at Night Blog
by Chris Nicholson

In 2015, the five of us partners at National Parks at Night had our first meeting, and in 2016 we ran our first five workshops together: chronologically, at Acadia, Zion, Crater Lake, Arches and Death Valley national parks. Tonight, at Bannerman Island in New York, we will run our 100th workshop. During these 8 years and 100 adventures, we have met and formed bonds with over 700 night photographers who have joined us. They are the people who have made the National Parks at Night dream possible, and our gratitude couldn’t be grander. With that feeling in our hearts, we never considered celebrat ..read more
