The last months we have seen a lot of news regarding a possible confrontation between NATO and Russia, this year or the next one. I hear that NATO is in no way a similar match to Russia since we could over run them with our air force in a day and after that we would simply push them out from NATO territory and begin the fight in Russia. If this is true why would Putin ever even do such a thing. Realism tells us that states only act in their self interests to increase their security/power. Are there any concrete examples of states willingly expending their resources/decreasing their power without expecting to benefit in it in some way?
