Amplenote An Evernote Contender
The Tech Savvy SMB

Amplenote, like Upnote (review), is a strong contender for the Evernote crown. I had looked at Standard Notes but tech support confirmed that there were no plans for a browser-based web clipper, so that ruled it out of the game. Unlike Upnote, which is simple and intuitive, Amplenote is a complex service, but it does come with an extensive tutorial and there are plenty of instructive videos on Youtube. The service, which is cross-platform, comprises four working areas – jots, notes, tasks and a calendar. Jots is where you place random, quickly-fire thoughts, anything from phone numbers throug ..read more

EM Client A Corporate Level Powerhouse
The Tech Savvy SMB

eM Client counters the most common complaint about Microsoft Outlook, like most of its products, is the amount of bloatware it contains.  If you are a small to medium-sized business, then eM Client would be the answer to your prayers. It is a jam-packed feature-full alternative to Outlook – and then some. Once installed, setting up is easy as the app has an import family that copies data from  Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail or Thunderbird. If that doesn’t float your boat, then there are imports to set up from Yahoo, Gmail, or raw IMAP data, etc ..read more

Surfshark Frustrating But So Good
The Tech Savvy SMB

Surfshark VPN has to rate as one of the most frustrating services I have ever used.  I first found Surfshark last year and was so blown away with it that I purchased a three-year subscription. This was despite the fact that I had four years to run on my NordVPN subscription.   It was fast, it had the super-fast WireGuard protocol and its cleanweb ad and tracker blocker worked perfectly. But the last 12 months have been a roller coaster ride. I wrote about my frustrations and after tearing my hair out I decided, with some reluctance, to go back to NordVPN. Then I caught a post o ..read more

Any.do Is Good, But Could Be Better

Any.do has been around for many years and is one of the more popular calendar and task management services available.  I looked at it back in the day when I decided on Todoist, but it felt a revisit was necessary to see how the service had developed over time. I like the idea of having an interface where the task management and calendar modules are aligned side by side on the desktop and browser apps, but I feel the company has missed a trick for the following reasons. First, when you have the tasks listed on the left-hand side, there is a row of tick-box tasks in the calendar. Initially ..read more

Surfshark VPN Beached After Losing Its Way
The Tech Savvy SMB

Surfshark blew me away when I first came across it last year. It was fast, it was clean and offered fabulous speeds through its Wireguard protocol. It took no time for me to forget my long term provider NordVPN and to take out an extended subscription. I wrote about the Road To Damascus conversion here.  However, in recent months the service has lost its shine, and the glossy super-fast package I was wowed by has started to dim. Here are my thoughts on why. The first signs were when the company started to drift away from being a VPN provider and set its sights on being a one-step Interne ..read more

Now that the world is opening up after the pandemic, it is time to brush up on your cybersecurity practices to ensure that you are safe online wherever in the world you are traveling to.  If, like me, you keep your life on your mobile devices, just losing your phone or tablet can have catastrophic after-effects on your financial, social and business life. UpNote Can Steal Evernote Crown
The Tech Savvy SMB

UpNote might just be one of the best note-taking and productivity tools that very few people have ever heard of.  Do a google search for “Best Note-Taking App of 2022” and you will get scores of results from respected sites such as Techradar through to obscure blogs run by dedicated tech geeks.  These reviews cover the usual suspects such as Google Keep, Evernote, Notion, etc but rarely ever mention UpNote. So, why was I looking and what criteria was I looking for? The two key criteria I needed were that it had to be multi-platform, in my case Windows desktop and two Android devices ..read more

Password Strategies To Keep You Safe
The Tech Savvy SMB

Passwords, apart from employees, are usually the weakest link in any cybersecurity chain. In 2019, Yubico found that two out of three survey respondents shared passwords with colleagues, more than half said they shared exact passwords on business and personal accounts and 57% said they did not change their passwords after a phishing attempt.  At a corporate and personal level, it is essential that employees and individuals must tighten up their password management if systems are to stay safe from attack, One current wisdom is that people should use three random words as a password and th ..read more
