Why Should Every Dancer Learn the Alexander Technique? A series of Alexander Technique lessons gives you skills for a lifetime in dance. It brings freedom to your body and control without tension. Dancing without tension gives beautiful, long, open lines, and free movement that is easier to control. As a dancer, you try to be the best you can be. Trying to achieve what may be difficult, trying to have larger movement, you may notice areas where your lines aren’t released, or it’s difficult and you’re a bit off, not quite on balance. Balance may be difficult, overall.  You try to hold on ..read more

I was teaching a lesson and it turned in a thoughtful direction. My pupil has a lot of tension and neck pain. He meditates, and I said to him, “It’s like when you meditate. You notice your thoughts floating by Like watching clouds in the sky. You have thoughts, but you are not them “You are the noticer. That is consciousness.”   “You can notice your body You can notice different parts and also the Whole And now notice that you are the noticer That is consciousness, and this work is about consciousness.”   “Be the noticer. Now you’re ..read more

Standing Tall

Hello my friends, Here’s a pre-pandemic true story for you.   “Own your height!” I suddenly said to him. “I think you need movement, and to breathe.”   We were working together; it was his third lesson. He wanted to know which part of his back belonged where and which position is correct. I spoke of overarching principles of the Alexander Technique with no results. I wanted to help him and it wasn’t working till I looked at him and said the one thing that was truly in my mind.   “Own your height!”   – and meant it! This was a command, not a request.   To be honest thi ..read more

Hello my friends! Thanks so much for stopping by. I’ve had a break from posting, but not from dancing or writing.  It’s time to share. Jumping into the deep end, here’s the heart of the heart of me as a dancer, sharing freely.   I wrote to a friend, “Dance makes sense in a different way now. I’m excited about some connections in the body but have to keep in mind that that’s practice, and sometimes you just have to dance.” She questioned, “just have to dance.”  Am I just letting go and having fun?  If so,  there’s nothing wrong with that.   I gave a worthy subject ..read more

Going Mental
Dance Without Limits - Applied Alexander Technique® with Dana Ben-Yehuda

I was trying to mentally go through my routines the other day.   I’ve been dancing them on occasion in my “dirt studio,” but I can’t move freely or fully other than super slow motion, and dancing in sneakers is like wearing clown shoes. Use the inside edge of a clown shoe? Ridiculous. There’s a big, wide heel and rounded ball of foot that’s nice and cushy but terrible for precision. Dancing Ballroom on sandy dirt and trying not to slide is an approximation. The little dirt patch is made for sliding into Home Plate, not doing double reverse overspin into throwaway oversway while da ..read more

Some Thoughts about Teaching Alexander Technique Online

Hello my friends, Continuing from my previous post, here are further thoughts about teaching Alexander Technique online:   I have given this very careful and considered thought. I was trained in a very traditional way of teaching the Alexander Technique, as a hands-on, educational method. It is with the greatest respect for the work that I say we take our conscious minds to the next step in evolution and thrive in this brave new world.   F.M. Alexander himself said that we are just at the beginning of this work and that it still needs to develop. He described the postural problems he was seei ..read more

Hello my friends, Thank you so much for visiting!  Pull up a chair and have a cup of tea and I’ll tell you a story.   It started with a can of tomato soup. Two days ago I opened a can of tomato soup. I cut the second finger of my right hand but didn’t notice it till I saw blood everywhere. It spattered all over my left hand but it didn’t hurt immediately. It’s been three days and it’s still bleeding. Every time I think it’s closed, I take off the bandage and sometime later it opens up again. Last night I took a bath and after, found blood on my towels and drops all over the bathtub and floor ..read more

It’s going to rain tonight It was cloudy today and the wind blew in more moisture Showers tonight and in the morning Clearing the air of dust and all the pollen of a dry February, a completely dry month with windy days and allergies galore. Cleaning the air of the smell of fear emanating from people self-isolating or working from home, some wearing masks. All of which is reasonable Because there is a Corona virus, Covid-19, and it is indeed transmissible and to some people, deadly. And like an animal we all, lemming-like, flock to the stores to gather up supplies and odd things like ingredien ..read more

Hello my friends!      Stretch the body, stretch the mind. There’s something to that. I’ve been stretching every single day as a commitment to myself, and I’ve also started writing again!   I’m blogging again after a long hiatus with my energy wrapped up in caring for family members.   The past couple of years have been a rush of travel back and forth, supporting elders and coming home to a rush of teaching and dance and caring for a very old and very beloved dog through his last year of life. Then transitioning to add a younger generation member, giving him a jump-start. It has been worth ev ..read more
