“Safety is our first priority” is a motto that Bothwell-Accurate takes to heart both within its offices and out in the field.  It is also a mission statement that has helped this year’s Outstanding Safety Culture Award winner maintain its high standing among industry peers. “Employee health and well-being is a condition of employment here.  All our employees sign on for safety starting on their first day with the company,” says Tom Bussey, Bothwell-Accurate’s health and safety manager, adding, “It’s not just about policies and procedures, either.  It’s about the many hats we w ..read more

When we became part of the project team on the YVR Spill project, we knew Bothwell had hit a milestone in Western Canada. The project is part of a larger $9.1 billion project employing more than 2,500 construction professionals. The scope of the project is daunting enough, but the logistics of constructing at a functioning airport add a whole new element.  For safety and security, each time there is an airplane emergency, our work must stop. Oh, and then there is Vancouver’s penchant for fog.  Fog so thick that it causes work to cease.  It not only prevents planes from landing ..read more

Finding a Reliable Commercial Roofing Contractor

If we had a penny for every third party property manager who has come to us for help with a roof gone wrong and started their story with: “My client said he knew a guy…”  Well…let’s just say we’d have a lot of pennies. Our clients come to us for help.  We replace dozens of roofs each year that are less than ten years old because a previous contractor did not install the system correctly.  We wish it wasn’t so, but, there it is.  The fact is, when an unqualified contractor installs a roof, they are putting your asset at risk.  Not only can incorrect installation leave ..read more

The Spadina Subway extension represents Toronto’s first endeavour to connect a suburb to the city proper.  Not only will it lead directly into SmartCentre’s new Vaughan Metropolitan Centre – the heart of the up-and-coming vibrant downtown of Vaughan – but it’s also a thoroughfare for York University’s 53,000 students. Balancing the needs of functional mobility with the desire to elevate passenger experience is no small thing.  As a project, York University Station combined our expertise with our drive to employ new technology. As projects go, this one was gold for a building contra ..read more

Between Phases 1 and 2 of the BMO Field renovations, Toronto FC made it to the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.  The start of Phase 2 construction was pushed back by a month to accommodate a potential home playoff game against the Montreal Impact.  However, the schedule for the opening game of the following season was already set. The original plan for the structural steel and the roof drains presented a challenge.  They simply could not all be installed in the time remaining.  An alternative was needed.  Bothwell worked with construction manager PCL ..read more

A Watertight Solution: Vaughan Metropolitan Centre

In the heart of the new “downtown for the suburbs,” sits SmartCentre’s 100 New Park Place, built by PCL and home to lead tenant, KPMG.  As the waterproofing contractor for the project, Bothwell was…er…flooded…with details as we tackled the underslab and wall waterproofing. The area has a high water table.  Due to the hydrostatic pressure the underslab had over 400 micropiles.  This was not a case where the material could simply be rolled out and welded – there was no pattern.  Rather each micropile had to be detailed. The challenge was to balance the amount of detailing w ..read more

Building ownership and commercial development is an entrepreneurial venture.  Whether you are looking to manage the building over the long term or sell in the short term, you need to know you will see a return on your investment. For building owners of industrial properties, there are added risks that come with revolving tenants who have very different needs of their leased space.  With each new tenant, HVAC, plumbing and electrical work is often required.  For your roof, that means one more hole in its system.  Every alteration can potentially void both manufacturer and ..read more

The Stewardship of Scotiabank Arena

The roof of the Scotiabank Arena – formerly the Air Canada Centre – is a project of pride for us.  Being a part of a national sporting landmark is no small thing.  We are still grateful for the opportunity 21 years ago that led to Bothwell becoming a stadium specialist. When the Scotiabank Arena signage was installed in 2019, it was discovered that the new roofing contractor’s scaffolding had punctured holes in the arena’s TPO roof membrane.  MLSE contacted us directly about repairs. As the contractor who built the roof, MLSE knew that we wouldn’t hesitate to ensure the landma ..read more

Hometown:  Richmond Hill, Ontario We reached Megan while she was home in Ontario to learn what the life of an alpine snowboarder is like and how sponsorship helps her to achieve her goals. How did you become an alpine snowboarder? My parents were avid skiers and all my cousins were on the snowboard race team at our home club.  I was the youngest and of course I had to do everything they did.  I started skiing at two and snowboarding at four.  I’ve never looked back. What drives you? I’ve always been so competitive.  I’ve been racing every weekend since I was four.&nbs ..read more

We got a hold of Megan in Kelowna to learn a bit more about what it’s like to be a professional golfer and what sponsorship means to her. You were born and raised in Kelowna, British Columbia, but you went to university at San Jose State in California.  What made you choose San Jose? They recruited me to play on their Division 1 Women’s Golf Team on a full ride scholarship.  San Jose was a great choice for me because I could play golf all year round and it was easy for me to travel to and from Kelowna. What was your area of study? Recreation Management.  It’s eve ..read more
