I am a TA for older students and the SPED teacher (A) tasked me with social skills for a student (A) without givinge any guidance or any real clue what specifically they wanted me to do. When I broached the subject, the teacher attempted toquickly allocate the other SPED teacher (B) to instruct me, however, that student (A) is in their (A's) caseload; not the person (B) they tried to put off responsibility to guide me. I'm drawing up an email of the position they have put me in which was completely unfair to me and the student. The last time something of this nature occured (different student ..read more

IEP accommodations vs class policies

The accommodations in IEPs in the time I’ve taught have been very generic. We have a program that comes with a drop down. I’ve seen no edits made to the drop down printed into signed IEPs. Stuff like: needs extra time. They might even get specific like: needs extra time on tests. Use of graphic organizers. So I’ve just have made many class policy. I let all students use notes on a test. I also let kids have as much time as they need to pass. I’ve tried many permutations of test settings and the results are negligible. But some case managers have said that giving accommodations for all violate ..read more

Majoring in special education. Is it a good idea?

It’s been pretty difficult to find what I’m interested in and what job I see myself doing in the future. So, it’s been tough trying to find a major, I’ve switched it quite the bit. I’ve looked at other Reddit posts and people have said I’d be competing with tons of people who have a lot of experience, I guess the same as every other field. I was wondering if it is a good career choice. I’m interested in it because my partners sister has Down syndrome. I’ve visited her high school, her after high school program, most of her activities, and dances. They seem fun and I enjoy going to these thing ..read more

Minnesota Teachers: How is the READ act affecting students in special education?
Special Education Teachers

Our school is changing curriculums next year to align with the READ act. I was wondering how your school is planning to approach this in regards to students in special education- mainly those with learning disabilities and an OHD diagnosis? Are you providing intervention time in the resource room during core instruction of reading and math? It sounds like our students in K-2 will now have a total of 120 minutes of reading per day. When are you able to provide intervention services during the day? Are you moving towards more push-in support? submitted by /u/Jswizzle66 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Special Education Files

We had a new special education director come in this school year, and it was quickly made apparent that she did not know what she was doing in a lot of ways. She packed up and left us with a ton of meetings, missing signatures, and a mess to clean up. I worked in special education a few years ago at a virtual school, so I have stepped in to help get things sorted out. In her office, she has all of our students' files with IEPs, testing data, MEEGS, REDs, etc. in binders with the student's full names on display. The office is used for meetings and lessons with students. Since I did special edu ..read more

Dysgraphia and school

My brother has dysgraphia (grade 8), and is finding it extremely difficult to cope at school. The pressure to write has caused him to develop a bunch of other behavioural issues as well. It’s really concerning, and me and my parents have no idea how to help him. Can someone here please inform me of what special arrangements or additional help they were provided with at school, or anything else that helped them cope. submitted by /u/Feisty_Shift_1949 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Dysgraphia?

Hello, I’m a parent with a nearly-7 (m) 1st grader. Both his Kindergarten and 1st grade teachers have indicated that he struggles a LOT with writing. 1st grade teacher called us in for a conference because 7 has started just shutting down in class - he’s above grade level in reading and math, and she said “he doesn’t avoid reading or I’d suspect dyslexia”. On school recommendation we’ve pursued private OT, who said that he has normal fine motor skills but when we turn shapes into letters he falls apart. She diagnosed him with dysgraphia. We are waiting for a neuropsych exam in June (checking ..read more

I was told my son needs SST paperwork before a 504 plan meeting?

I’m a bit confused and am hoping you all might give me some insight. My elementary-age son recently got an ADHD diagnosis from a therapist. She recommended I request a 504 plan for him. He had a very difficult time earlier this school year with a teacher who was very strict, and he ended up pulling out his eyelashes as a stress response. He’s doing much better now with a more accommodating teacher. We want to use a 504 plan to get him set up with some accommodations to hopefully avoid a repeat of that situation. Anyway, as a teacher I’ve had students with 504 plans. I was under the impression ..read more

Help us improve test accessibility for students with visual impairments

Hello, please delete if this is not allowed. One of my students is legally blind.. We became frustrated with the WIAT 4 from Pearson. It is an exam used to measure intelligence a part of his triennial assessment. My student is very intelligent and has matured a lot in the last few years. He was eager to show what he can do. Unfortunately, the test is not accessible to him. The exam is administered on an iPad so there is a lot Pearson could have done to increase accessibility but none of those features are enabled. I called Pearson and they told me that there is nothing we can do. That is just ..read more
