How does inclusion work at your school?

I'm just asking, because I'm a bit at my wit's end with how we should do it in our school. If it's not working at your school I totally get it, but I am looking for the people that have a system working and are willing to talk about it. For context, we have an SDC with five students who really only go out for PE and specials. Then, we have a program taking students who would have been in a higher level self-contained room and putting them into the general ed classroom with hopefully para support. After that, we have just inclusion. I know that our district calls it co-teaching but there's not ..read more

Hello everyone! I'm a secondary para educator in the process of getting my RBT certification. I need to find someone to observe me. I've called several clinics that are close by asking if they can work with me on the advice of a SpEd teacher at my school, and no one has even called me back. My school has one BCBA who is on campus once a week, but she is unfortunately unavailable to help. I'm not sure if asking here will work but it could! Are there any BCBA's here who work in Seattle, WA and are willing to help me with my certification? Thank you :) submitted by /u/Kooky_Recognition_34 [visi ..read more

Anybody use TeachTown?

I’m currently piloting it in my HS self contained classroom for the next couple of weeks and have some questions from those who actually have used it: Today in science, my students went through 4 days worth of materials in 1 day. If I would have only done 1 days worth, they would have sat there for almost 40 minutes. There doesn’t seem to be enough units to actually get through 4 years of ELA and math and 3 years of science/social studies. My thoughts is to just use it as supplemental materials (currently the district doesn’t provide any curriculum so I’ve kinda made up my own). Is this the c ..read more

Assistive Tech Implementation

I have some IEP implementation questions related to assistive technology for reading and writing. My elementary-age child’s IEP accommodations call for the use of assistive technology. She is in a mostly low-tech type of school where kids don’t learn on chromebooks, etc. so this is a little different for them. One accommodation says “use of low tech tools such as peer reader and high tech tools such as audiobooks,” and another says “use of low tech tools for shorter writing tasks and use of high tech tool such as read and write on computer for longer writing assignments.” Additionally, their ..read more

1 on 1 being absent?

Just wanted some advice. My son has recently received a 1 on 1 aide for behavior. It was placed on his IEP last month. The teacher has informed me that there has not been a one on one for about a week. Before the week there were subs that would come in. I made some emails and received a call from the district basically telling me that the 1on1 is out on leave, they are understaffed, and if someone else's student is absent they will fill in with my son. They are working on getting another permanent 1on1 for him. Is there anything else I can do? How long can my son be without 1on1 services? Im ..read more

Difference between 12:1 and ict (other than the number of students and adults in the room)

I have some students at my school who are mandated to be in a 12:1 but we don’t have that so they are in ict. What is the difference between these two, other than the class size and number of teachers/paras? Do 12:1 classes use different curriculum? Is it generally easier to give students more attention? What is the benefit of placing a student in a 12:1? And what would warrant a student to be placed in 12:1 over ict? submitted by /u/pisces_iscariott [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

A few months ago i started working as an IA for a 2.1/2 y/o girl with suspected autism, and recently got her diagnosis. There is talk about sending her to an ABA school(we are a small therapeutic childcare program) So as i’m looking into it I see autism speaks is largely for ABA, but i’ve heard in the past that this problem can be harmful towards the community, i am doing lots of my own research but i would like to know personal opinions and experiences, and if she doesn’t change schools if i should learn more about ABA <3 thanks! submitted by /u/herb_girl- [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I’m wondering: how many paraprofessionals should a special ed classroom have? What is the typical para-to-student ratio for special ed classrooms? We currently have a 3 para to 10 student ratio (plus the teacher). submitted by /u/Glass-Aardvark543 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
