I had no idea upon my story acceptance for this short piece I’d be in an edition with superstars, including such SFFH luminaries as Michael Moorcock, Tim Lebbon, and M.R. Carey! The story I wrote is one of a near future earth which has been ecologically devastated by climate change, but is slowly being resurrected by people like my protagonist, Euanthe. She’s neurodivergent, wary of the dangers, but braves the surface of a world she cannot even inhabit, though the weather’s freaking her out. And something has gone very, very wrong… Just check out this table of contents: Introduction – Ian Wha ..read more

What’s it really like in Glasgow?

With Worldcon coming to this city in 2024, and as an outsider who made this place her home, I thought it might be useful for some folks to get a look at the realities of the city. Especially if they’re visiting. I might add to this later, I might not. We will see. Since the Hugos controversy kicked off, many faces are turned now towards Glasgow. Some seem to expect the Worldcon 2024 committee (of which I am not a member or in anyway affiliated except as a prospective participant and definite attending member) to fix everything that went wrong in the previous year. I’m not going to comment on t ..read more

So, Under the Moon ended up winning the British Fantasy Award for Best Collection 2023. I had not seen it coming. I was up against some amazing writers, and still can’t quite believe it. But it did happen, so I guess on to the next thing. It took me a long time to put this post up. I guess that’s what an entire upbringing of “no-one likes a showoff” will get you. Not that I had ever intended to brag or boast or tell myself this meant I was amazing, but yeah. I guess I can say, “it’s pretty neat” to have won. And I’m happy it happened. I’ll sort out my feelings on whether or not I truly deserv ..read more

I finally broke. Though Twitter had been my online home and source of a wonderful bookish community, I am making the move to Mastodon at least for now. Come find me at https://wandering.shop/web/@EMFaulds I’m new to the site and while it has its limitations, for now I’m getting a much more genuine experience due to the lack of algo gaming that was going on so much at the bird site. People see what you’ve written! You don’t get posts suppressed just because you happen to put a link in it! Amazing. I hope it stays good, because frankly it has been disheartening watching Twitter crash and burn. I ..read more

Shortlisted for a British Fantasy Award!

I’m stoked and flattered and humbled and feeling slightly sick still after finding out I was shortlisted for a British Fantasy Award for Best Short Fiction. My story, A Flight of Birds, follows a lonely “vampire” barista working late nights in Glasgow’s West End. I put vampire in quotes because in fact, they’re a very special type of Scottish mythological creature. Similar to, but different from, the mainland European lore. They meet a lot of other lonely souls, and do something about that all so overwhelming hunger that stalks behind them. The story nestles in Glaswegian ambience. I really wa ..read more

Under the Moon on the British Fantasy Award Shortlist 2023

Under the Moon has been nominated for a British Fantasy Award! I’m chuffed, but also intimidated by the competition on that list. It’s all… a bit overwhelming. As a category, it is smaller than, say, short story. But if you’ve read any of the others, you know it’s in no way a slam dunk for my little book. I hope it gets a few more readers, if nothing else. I know the “I’m just happy to be nominated” thing is a bit cliche, but I really do feel like I’ve already achieved something just by being mentioned on the same list as the other nominees. If this is as far as that goes, I’m more than happy ..read more

7-10 April, Birmingham I’ve got quite a lot on at the BSFA’s annual convention, this time in a hopefully sunny Birmingham. This year the con is entitled “Conversation” and you can bet there will be some over the weekend. Here’s where you can find me: Friday 15:00 Rockets Matter: Listen to Me! – a panel about the commercialisation of space. With Jackie Burns Bill Ray (moderator) Allen Stroud 16:30 Climate Fiction: a Very Current Subgenre – a panel on one of the areas I write about a lot. With Vincent Docherty Ian Green Hildur Knútsdóttir Ian McDonald Saturday 12:00 Reading Aloud for Perfor ..read more
