October is here and I’ve been busy, busy, busy. But of course I haven’t been too busy to keep you updated on all the great things that SLPVideoGames.com has been up to. So in this post, I’m excited to highlight one of the newest video games that I just added to the SLPVideoGames.com library. It’s called Gravity Truck Racer! (And I made a “walkthrough” video for you so you can really get a feel for how it all looks.) Vroom vroom! As the name implies, this video game has something to do with gravity. In typical truck races, trucks roll on the ground, right? Well, in this video game, the notion ..read more

Clients or Collaborators
Erik X. Raj: Speech-Language Pathologist

We, as speech-language pathologists, are well aware that for most paperwork and insurance-related things, the people on our caseloads are called “clients.” I get it. But as I continue to grow and evolve as a clinician, I find myself questioning the typical terminology. To me, the word “collaborator” feels better – it feels more real. To me, “client” feels very one-way. Like, the individual is simply there to take from me, and that’s it. But that’s not how the therapeutic process works. There has to be back-and-forth. There has to be give and take between both parties involved. This is why “col ..read more

Inviting Your School-Aged Clients to Teach You New Words
Erik X. Raj: Speech-Language Pathologist

One of the most popular online game experiences right now is Among Us. If you work together with school-aged children, there’s a high likelihood that they play Among Us, and there’s a high likelihood that they enjoy it. One of the cool things about Among Us is there’s a bunch of “lingo” that is game-specific that, at least in my experience, children enjoy saying outside of the game. So, as curious clinicians, I think this is a great opportunity for all of us to ask our school-aged clients to teach US new words so WE can grow, as communicators. Perhaps the most popular word from Among Us is “su ..read more

Here’s another “walkthrough” video about a video game that can be found over at SLP Video Games. It’s called Slimy Little Dude and let me tell you, it’s a tricky one! But as I say in the video, it’s such a rewarding experience when you finally get past a level that you’re struggling on. Very rewarding! Let’s get slimy! The whole premise of Slimy Little Dude is that you need to get the slimy little dude from point A to point B without having him hit spikes (ouch!) or fall off the ledge (ahhh!). And one of the complexity layers that is placed on top of this video game is the whole “motion exper ..read more

As I’ve said in the video above, a bunch of my friends have reached out to me about SLP Video Games, and more specifically about how they are getting stumped on certain levels in certain video games. So, I had the idea of creating some “walkthrough” videos where I show you how you can beat each level of a video game over at SLP Video Games. Here we are – it’s October 2020 and many of us practicing clinicians are involved in lots and lots of teletherapy. I don’t know about you but when COVID-19 took away the joy that is face-to-face therapy, it really threw me for a loop. *SIGH* Of course I consider myself a person who “gets” technology but even I wasn’t truly prepared for the massive shift to almost exclusively all virtual delivery of speech-language therapy services. Growth is a choice. I took an honest look at what my colleagues and I were doing. How were we presenting our speech-language therapy activities to our caseload? Th ..read more

Earlier this year, I had the unbelievable honor to deliver a keynote talk to the school-based SLPs at the 2019 Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Annual Conference. For anyone who knows me, you know that Michigan holds a very, very special place in my heart. I went to Wayne State University and spent four wonderful years living, learning, and working right in the heart of Detroit. During those unforgettable years, I explored a massive amount of Michigan and truly fell in love with it. And though I haven’t lived there since 2015, I still go back each and every summer because of t ..read more
