How do you choose your child’s doctor?
Cedars Story - Changing Perceptions of Down Syndrome

If there is one thing that having a number of children has taught me, it is that you have to partner with those you choose to walk the path of raising your child with. You have to be comfortable with those who you choose to allow to guide your family as it relates to your child’s health. If your child has special needs, like my 6th does, this valuable partnership becomes even more evident. So, how do you choose your child’s doctor or specialist? Have Confidence The first thing you have to do is be confident. A parent who is not confident that they know their child better than anyone else will ..read more

From the first kiss of air on your skin to the moment you reached my arms felt like a life time. I finally saw you outside of my body and all I could think was “That is my baby, that is my baby, that is MY BABY.” I was flooded with thoughts, emotions, and hormones like the sweetest roller coaster ride. I grabbed your squishy, messy body with both hands and pulled you tight onto my chest. Captivated, speechless, so in love. Time stood still as I took in all of your beauty. I held you tight and stroked your head. We were in our own world, just you and me. Looking over your whole body I realized ..read more

Cedars Story - Changing Perceptions of Down Syndrome

Its been weeks and the Coronavirus is still on the forefront of the minds of many, especially those in the Down Syndrome community. As parents and loved ones we worry about our children on a day to day basis, but the introduction of coronavirus has taken the worry to a whole new level, especially as it relates to Coronavirus and Down Syndrome recovery statistics, let’s face it, there is not a lot of information out there. The one thing I really love about this community though is our desire to help one and other through the tough times. So, as there have been cases of Coronavirus among our ran ..read more

Down Syndrome and Covid 19 a recovery story
Cedars Story - Changing Perceptions of Down Syndrome

In early March 2020 when the first cases of Coronavirus and subsequent Covid19 were identified in my home state of Ohio, I began to feel concerned. We are a large family, but my biggest concern was for our youngest child, Cedar, who has Down syndrome. What I couldn’t find as the pandemic raged across the USA was any cases of individuals with Down Syndrome contracting Covid 19 and how it impacted them. Then I did hear of one, a fatality of an adult man with Down Syndrome from Covid 19 in South America and then one in New Jersey and just after that, this story, Max’s story of contracting Covid 1 ..read more

I have had many jobs in my lifetime, from driving a train to working in a bingo hall, but I always knew my most important, rewarding and meaningful job would start the day I became a mama. Deep down in my heart I always knew I would somehow, someday become a mama. It’s so hard to describe the feelings you have for your child until they are actually here, on this earth, in your arms. Being their protector and lifeline, my heart was fuller than ever before, but also ached in a way I had never imagined. There is a reason why “love you so much it hurts” is a term used. You want so desperately for ..read more

Beautiful Twin Girls and a Down Syndrome Diagnosis
Cedars Story - Changing Perceptions of Down Syndrome

After years of struggling to have a baby, my husband and I found out we were pregnant – with TWINS!  We already had a son that we loved more than life itself, but wanted to give him a brother or sister, and he was getting two!  We were overjoyed with the news and couldn’t wait to share our news with everyone we knew!!! We decided to find out the gender of the babies so we could prepare for two.  Believing we were having boys, it came a quite a shock when the ultrasound tech announced, “Baby A is a girl.  Baby B is a girl.”  We were surprised, but excited as well.  Sex doesn’t matter as long a ..read more

Make an IEP profile
Cedars Story - Changing Perceptions of Down Syndrome

Today was a hard day. I didn’t think it was going to be and I thought I was prepared, but sometimes those salty tears well up when we least expect them. This was the day I received the clinical basis that Cedar’s IEP will be based on. I decided to make an IEP profile. We do plan to homeschool Cedar but want to access available therapeutic services in our district as a supplement to what we are providing at home. I decided that seeing his deficits on paper could be a strength as the more they are visible the more services he qualifies for, but that didn’t make it easier. Related Pos ..read more

I Am Me- The Story Behind One Mom’s Journey
Cedars Story - Changing Perceptions of Down Syndrome

Each of us has a story, an important one that defines who we are and why we do what we do. Some of our stories evolve as we are given twists and turns in life and some of those experiences make us want to do big things. I became a published author after wanting the world to see children, like Cedar, as beautiful and fun loving children who do the same things as other children do. Katelyn became and author after wanting the world to see the power of humanity in her son, Jameson, also born with Down syndrome. Thus was born the story, I Am Me, the story behind one mom’s journey. Katelyn sha ..read more

What does Peanut Butter Falcon mean for Down Syndrome?
Cedars Story - Changing Perceptions of Down Syndrome

With a name like Peanut Butter Falcon one is left wondering what kind of a film this actually could be. I had heard a quiet buzz in the Down syndrome community about an upcoming film where the star was a young man with Down syndrome. This, I want to see. Like most parents to a child with Down syndrome, I want to see a glimpse of the hope that is possible for my child’s future. Not every individual with Down syndrome has the same skillset but acting in a big screen movie, memorizing lines, and giving interviews are all pretty amazing things that offer hope to parents newer on this path. So ..read more
