Before and After: An Inexpensive, Renter-Friendly DIY Backsplash (For Real!)

Installing tiled kitchen backsplashes can be expensive, especially with inflation going up and labor availability going down. And for those considering the DIY route, keep in mind that as a professional handyman who's done all kind of messy jobs.... I still hate cutting tile. So when it came to finishing out our kitchen, I asked my wife to find a solution that didn't involve a tile saw. We knew we'd only need a small amount, since our sink is in front of a window and we just needed to cover the part behind the stove. One possibility would be to simply use a nice color of backsplash pain ..read more

Why I Love Working in an Arty Town

I really love my job, and I think the best part of it is getting to meet so many incredible locals, whether they've been here all their lives or just moved into town. (We seem to be getting a lot of people moving down here from Chicago lately.) And now that we've set up our separate brand as professional picture hangers near Asheville, we also get to "meet" a lot of wonderful art collections. Last week we worked with a delightful couple who had a large collection including some great pieces from local painters, like this one of guinea hens by the artist known as Cornbread. On the right is a ..read more

Well, it's been a year, but I'm back to blogging! What can I say but the old refrain, "I've been busy." And one of the things that's kept me most busy has been interior painting in Asheville. This year we're starting to see a little more color sneaking in. I know Maximalism has been a big trend in Architectural Digest for quite awhile, and it's finally starting to come to our mountain town. I've already blogged about picking paint colors and how to paint with bold colors, but there's one painter's secret I haven't mentioned, which is how to choose the best version of the most dangerous color ..read more

If you're trying to get a kitchen remodeled in the Asheville area, I might have just the guy for you. Today I have the pleasure of introducing a new member of our network of craftsmen: Sam Hubbard of Hubbard Carpentry and Remodeling. Sam recently moved here from South Carolina, and I learned from a friend that he was looking for new remodeling jobs in the Asheville and Waynesville areas. As always, the first thing I asked to see was his portfolio of work, and I was truly impressed. Check out this before-and-after of a big farmhouse kitchen renovation he recently did. How to Save Money on "Custom" Cabinets
The Handyman Plan, LLC Blog

Sometimes you have a vision for a centerpiece in your home that can't be accomplished with out-of-the-box cabinets from the hardware store. When that happens you might think of having custom cabinets made. But custom can be expensive, so here's a trick to save money: ask about semi-custom cabinets. Today I'll show you an example of a semi-custom job and how well it turned out. It started with a phone call from local interior designer Liz Hackett.  One of her clients, a couple living in West Asheville, loves to entertain and wanted to create a cocktail bar in their dining room. After ..read more

Replacing a Can Light with a Regular Light

Not long ago I had a customer who wanted to replace a big recessed can light with a more ordinary light fixture. Of course, she had the electrician come out first to remove the existing can light and install a box for the new fixture. But that left a big hole around the new box. This is one of the more tricky drywall repairs because of course, you can't just fill in this hole with skim coat and be done with it! I started by adding a support made of thin wood which I screwed to the existing drywall. Then I added a custom-cut patch to fill in. My first patch was actually a bit small, and I s ..read more

Summer is almost here, the weather is fine, and calls to our Asheville handyman service are picking back up! As an essential business, we're still open during the COVID-19 shutdown, although of course we're practicing safety precautions. Luckily I already have a pretty good mask: Try getting a virus through this! As calls have picked up, we've been getting a lot of service requests from people who really need a plumber or an electrician, not a handyman. So when do you need a licensed specialist?
