Publication of this article is supported by Guardant Health. We all know, far too well, the toll that colorectal cancer (CRC) takes on the individuals and families it impacts. And in recognizing that each year, more than 150,000 new cases are reported – and nearly 53,000 lives are still lost[i]   – we also know that our fight against the disease is far from over. Recently our Sr. Director of Mission & Partnerships, Erin Peterson, sat down with Guardant Health’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Craig Eagle, to hear why he believes that hope – and positive change for colorectal cancer ..read more

Faces of Blue: Jessica Catlin
Colon Cancer Coalition Blog
by Grant Berg

Jessica Catlin is not someone who shies away from the truth. When she was diagnosed with stage IIIb colorectal cancer in 2016 at the age of 39, she started keeping a blog which she later self-  published as a book. In the book, she details the good, the bad, and the ugly of her experience. For Jessica, there were plenty of all three along the way. She uses the truth to advocate for herself and others because as Jessica puts it, “taboos kill people.”  Jessica’s cancer treatment included radiation, chemotherapy, a temporary and then reversed ostomy, and surgery to rid the cancer ..read more

ACS 2024 New Statistics
Colon Cancer Coalition Blog
by Cadence Paramore

The American Cancer Society (ACS) released its 2024 Cancer Facts and Figures Report on January 17, and the statistics are alarming. Below are the key takeaways.  Colorectal cancer is now the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and the second in women under 50 years old. The previous estimate was that this would happen in 2030. This is devastating, especially when considering that colorectal cancer is one of the most treatable diseases when caught in the early stages through on-time screening. In addition, up to one-third of people diagnosed before 50 have a family history or gen ..read more

Part 2: My Colonoscopy: The Prep & Procedure
Colon Cancer Coalition Blog

Before my prep, I religiously watched all of Allison Rosen’s (a colon cancer survivor and wonderful awareness advocate) prep-tip TikToks in the days leading up to my colonoscopy, which was super helpful! I stocked up on all the essentials that her and her followers recommend (Gatorade, apple juice, Lemonheads, lime popsicles, etc), I already have a bidet, and I fell even more in love with my 64 oz water bottle and my blanket cloak – It’s so important to stay hydrated, cozy, and warm! Prep day I tried to relax as much as possible, and worry as little as possible. I made sure to drink plenty of ..read more

Part 1: My Colonoscopy: Making The Appointment & The Pre-Prep
Colon Cancer Coalition Blog

There are many different reasons why someone might consider getting a colonoscopy: they’re 45 or older, have a family history, or are experiencing symptoms. For me, being only 23, it was a combination of the last two reasons that I finally scheduled my colonoscopy for February 14, 2024; Valentine’s Day.  Making The Appointment: I’ve always had unexplained changes in my bowel habits ever since I was a little kid, but I just chalked that up to “something that everyone experiences, but doesn’t talk about.” It’s not necessarily a “normal” topic to bring up with a friend or a coworker. “So, do ..read more

Have you ever noticed how in the month of March, landmarks across the country change their lights to blue? Maybe you’ve seen social media posts promoting #BlueForCRC and have found yourself wondering, what is this all for? Well, all that blue is to help raise awareness for colon cancer!  #BlueForCRC has become a nationally and internationally recognized movement which all started back in 2014 with the lighting of the 35W Bridge over the Mississippi River in Minnesota. The goal of this movement is to not only help raise people’s awareness about the risks of colon cancer, but also to encour ..read more

Tips for Newly Diagnosed Patients
Colon Cancer Coalition Blog

As a coalition, each of us plays a different role in one ultimate purpose: increase screening and educate others about signs and symptoms to end colorectal cancer related deaths. And for most of us, this is because we understand all-too-well the toll that colorectal cancer takes. Either because we’ve been through it ourselves, or someone close to us has. Most of us have been in this world for so long and helped so many people (survivors, caregivers, family members, and more), but we can’t forget who sits at the precipice of this scary new world– newly diagnosed patients. So we asked some membe ..read more
