There is a collection of unusually shaped printed matter on my bookshelf. Tiny leaflets, fold-out books, really long flyers, giant kids’ books. I collect them from second-hand markets, museums, and keepsakes from online orders. I keep them as inspiration if I have time for a project one day then I can borrow ideas from these unusual shapes! But to be honest it’s not that, I just like collecting beautiful objects. Last year I took part in the Bergen Art Book Fair buffet, next to the Art Book Fair they organised a shop with local artist’s publications. An eclectic collection of all sorts of ..read more

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference. Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do. Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. T ..read more

Gouache Hydrangeas
Viktorija Illustration

As winter months wet and grey days start to get to me, it’s so nice to escape it all by drawing little joys from sunnier days. I had this small sketch on my wall, of a girl with hydrangeas for months, she and the flowers felt like the perfect subject to explore. Here I combined traditional gouache with some acryla gouache. For soft and textured brush strokes, vivid colours and dreamy atmosphere ..read more

I’m a huge art supplies nerd and hoarder. I love trying new things in search of inspiration and just curiosity. It’s such a satisfying and fun experience exploring new material or colour. Over the years I’ve tried many many different paints. I prefer using paints which are made out of one/two pigments and buy some tubes of colours I use the most, so I don’t need to premix them. Here are 12 my favourite colours and paints. I consider these 12 to be quite essential if you are serious about gouache painting. And the extra ones are here for fun, mainly colours I use a lot in my work so I buy premi ..read more

The other day I was teaching gouache painting workshop and painted this woman while demonstrating different techniques. As finishing touches I added marks with oil pastels. I chose three colours light yellow, blue, orange and added marks across the painting. They helped the finished work to look more harmonious and added fun energy to the drawing. One of my favourite qualities of gouache is how versatile it is and how it lends itself to be worked on with dry mediums ..read more

5 things you need to get started painting with gouache

Photo by Diana Stainton I believe that all art materials are just inspiration you can buy! A set of gouache My recommendation is to get a starter set by Holbein or Winsor and Newton. Art grade gouache is higher quality and you get more value for your money. Paper Paper is extremely important. A good paper will let your paint shine and low quality paper will not allow you to get the most out of your paints. Go for watercolour paper, choose from hot press (smooth) or cold press (textured). You can also use heavyweight cartridge paper. Brushes You need two or three brushes to get the most out of ..read more
