Adam Updates

It’s been three weeks since Adam died and it’s all a blur. I cry randomly and miss him so much. This is the first time I’ve been able to write anything about his death. I’m planning to meet with Gina to talk about the last week Adam was alive and try to reconstruct what happened, and I’ll share that in a later post.Adam was so brave, and so strong, and he kept so much of his suffering in his last days from us. He wanted to protect us and make it easier for us. He wanted to live so badly. And he fought so hard. He had so much to live for and so many who loved him. I don’t have the words for how ..read more

I can’t write any title for this post that can capture our loss. My beautiful boy died this morning. Adam was with his family and his death was peaceful. He has fought so hard these past 4 ½ years because he knew he had so much to live for. Finally it was just too much for his tired body to endure. We’ll have a celebration of Adam’s life next Saturday, December 9 from 11-2 at the Georgia Botanical Gardens in Athens. A Facebook group has been created for you to share photos, videos, or stories about Adam. https://m.facebook.com/groups/129945184341550 I will make one more post in a few days ..read more

November 7, 2017- Things a little worse

Adam’s legs are weaker and his muscle atrophy is severe. A week ago he could lift his legs some and flex his feet, now he can only move his toes. He’s also losing muscle tone in his arms and getting weaker. I’m not sure whether his upper body weakness is due to the neuropathy spreading or from lack of use. It’s been difficult having daily physical therapy because of other complications. One day its a pentamidine treatment, the next he’s getting a port installed, or going down for more MRI’s of CT scans, or in too much pain. Adam is frustrated that there are no signs that things are getting bet ..read more

October 30, 2017- Still in hospital
Adam Updates

Not much has changed since the last update. Adam is still in the hospital, in BMTU. He is not able to use his legs and has very little feeling in them. He’s still receiving steroids, but they’ve begun to taper the dosage. Most days he’s getting some form of physical and occupational therapy trying to teach him to transfer safely from his bed to wheelchair etc and some simple exercises that he can do in bed. They’re also working with us to get equipment (e.g., hospital bed, transfer board, shower transfer bench), so that when he is discharged we’ll be ready. But most of the time he’s depressed ..read more

If I haven’t written for two weeks, either nothing is happening or too much is happening to write. Unfortunately, its the latter. Adam was in a routine of going into the clinic for antibiotics, watching out for fever, and getting fevers when they tried to taper his steroids. This began to change about two weeks ago. Adam’s legs started to tingle, like they were asleep. It became harder and harder for him to walk until last Monday and Tuesday he began to lose strength to the point that he stumbled and it was hard for him to get back on his feet. I brought him into clinic for a regular appointme ..read more

October 11, 2017- Pneumonia but out of hospital

Adam was discharged last Friday in world record time. We were on the road by 12:30. He does have a viral pneumonia and some pretty severe chest pains that change location from day to day. But he’s out and happy about that. He’s still getting antibiotics in clinic and started a 7-day round of Vidaza (chemo) on Monday. He’s still taking the Idhifa and Rydapt and taking steroids to address symptoms that may be connected to differentiation syndrome. Adam’s blast count goes up and down. Yesterday it was 56% but his white count is not going crazy and staying pretty low. He has a lumbar puncture ..read more

October 3, 2017- Back in hospital

So we’re back after three, short days at home. Adam had a high fever yesterday (103+) and they readmitted him to the unit on the 4th floor at Northside. You know he was feeling bad when he didn’t argue about having to go back in. He also had severe pains when breathing, associated shortness of breath, and sweats. He went through 6 shirts and two changes of linen last night.Because he’s neutropenic, they’ll go through the checking for infection protocols, waiting for cultures to come back. However, his symptoms are also consistent with his differentiation syndrome (DS) and this seems like a rep ..read more
