Just outside the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, you can find the Siyob Bazaar, the largest bazaar in Samarkand. The city itself is located in Uzbekistan and lies along the ancient trade route known as the Silk Road. All manner of daily necessisties are sold in the bazaar. There's the usual variety of fresh local produce, lots of different snacks, hardy Uzbek bread including the popular Samarkand non, and of course - dried apricots. Brightly colored produce is beautifully arranged to arrest the eyes just long enough that you soon find yourself engaged with a seller insisting you just have a little taste ..read more

In what is surely one of Hanoi's most instagrammable spots, Quảng Phú Cầu is a small village at least an hour's drive from the typical tourist accommodations in the French Quarter. The name means, "Village of Incense," and has been keeping the traditional craft of making incense alive for over a 100 years. Nowadays though, it's basically a social media influencer's ideal destination. The process of making incense sticks involves a number of preparatory steps to cut and smooth the bamboo into ideal sized sticks. The sticks are dyed and left out to dry in the sun, and eventually coated in a mix ..read more

I used Thamel as my base while in Kathmandu, spending several nights there both at the start and end of my time in Nepal. There's always a lot going on there, and d ..read more

There's something you should know about Uzbekistan. The historic sites are all very walkable, and they make for fantastic settings to enjoy the sunrise. Even when the sites are a bit spread out, you'll probably only pay a couple bucks or so to take a taxi between them. When I plan out my trips, I try to maximize the number of opportunities I have for catching the sunrise and sunset. Of course, there's occasionally the day I might set aside just to sleep in, be lazy and recover a bit if I'm hopping all over the place. The normal routine of trying to locate great spots for sunrise and sunset co ..read more

One of many Ethiopian pilgrims I encountered by the rock hewn churches of Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Arriving for the Ethiopian Orthodox Christmas, she is joined by tens of thousands of other pilgrims. Dressed simply and not carrying many belongings, the pilgrims come from all over Ethiopia, walking up to hundreds of miles to make their pilgrimage ..read more
