My ongoing conservation work with Scenic Hudson is not only some of the most meaningful work I do, it’s also the most creatively challenging. It puts me in difficult situations where I often have no idea how I’m going to capture an image or series of images that convey some essence of the location. On top of that, I’m often visiting for the first time, without any trails to follow, and a tight deadline. I usually receive a map of the area with boundaries and points of interest, but it’s very general and really just a rough guide. I also use satellite imagery to get a better sense of the terra ..read more

David Ward on Print Sharpness

You can almost always tell a photographer at an exhibition by their habit of “print sniffing”: they invariably stand incredibly close to any image to check how sharp it is. But they would do well to realize that no one ever stood in front of a photograph and wept just because it was sooooo incredibly sharp. David Ward ..read more

The weekly Creative Critique—Live continues this week with our 4th webinar this Thursday, April 23rd at 2pm EDT (New York). So far it’s been very enjoyable to offer feedback and insights on submitted images and how best to interpret them in Adobe Lightroom. The response has been very positive, and I’m grateful for the trust and support of everyone who’s attended and submitted images.   We’ve had some technical glitches along the way, including an aborted webinar last week which I rescheduled for last night and almost successfully completed before Youtube let us down about 72 minutes in. I ..read more

I hope you, your family, and your friends are safe and healthy during this health crisis we’re facing. Fortunately, hiking alone is a safe activity, and the solitude is a wonderful way to reassess what truly matters in life: family, love, kindness, health, and generosity to others. Much of the rest is just noise. Now is as good a time as ever to reconsider what you really want out of life, and pursue it with passion and commitment. Life is more fragile than we realize.  I’m excited to announce the new Creative Critique—Live,  a weekly live webinar where I will critique and share ways to ..read more

Successful Printing Starts With the Image

In all my years of printing and teaching printing workshops, the single most important thing I’ve learned is that 75% of a print’s success depends on the quality of the photograph. Unless you start with an image that already has something to say, it will be impossible to produce a print that resonates with others. Sure, I may be able to make a technically proficient print, but that’s not what I want. I want to make meaningful prints, and that starts when I’m in the field with my camera. What Is An Image About? When asked what an image is about, you might say it’s about a “beautiful landscape ..read more

The Importance of Principles Over Formulas
Robert Rodriguez Jr - Blog

This is something I’ve talked about many times in my books and workshops, yet it bears repeating often—we are all susceptible to short term tactics over long term strategies. Who doesn’t like the rush of immediate success? I sure do. Yet formulas often leave us without a good “why,” whereas a deep understanding of the principles lets us evaluate decisions and determine what works best for each of us. Shane Parrish, from one of my favorite blogs, beautifully describes another way of thinking about it especially when it seems everyone is an “expert.” “Generally, the people who know the most abou ..read more
