Unlocking creativity through weave
The Loom Room

It’s taken me years and many iterations of my weaving life but now I’ve got to the stage of weaving being an expression of what my soul is trying to say and I’m not worried about speed or efficiency. It’s all about unlocking creativity through weave, for myself but also for others. The feeling of making a difference in someone’s life (which I’ve been told I have done for several people) is so uplifting and makes teaching so much richer. All my work now comes from self-expression and exploration and then putting that in ways that can inspire and help other people, through my writing and my teac ..read more

Dreams that become realities!
The Loom Room

I’m sure we have all had what seemed to us unrealistic dreams – those ‘perhaps one day, if everything works out’ or ‘if I ever inherit some money, this is what I would do with it’ types of dreams. Well, sometimes things do just work out and in completely unexpected ways!! It’s taken a while…. In 2002 I went to the US for the first time to see an amazing exhibition at the Textile Museum, Washington DC,  called Technology as Catalyst: Textile Artists on the Cutting Edge, featuring such luminaries in the textile art world as Lia Cook, Susan Brandeis, Junco Sato Pollack, Cynthia Schira, Hito ..read more

Camels, alphabets – and weaving
The Loom Room

The smallest, silliest thing can be the straw that broke the camel’s back – in my case, it was the lightweight vacuum cleaner that saw me incapacitated for a whole week this week !!  Mind you, I think it was probably the beer festival the day before – the heavy beer-fridge moving, plus the hauling of many crates of bottled beer (at least on the return trip they were mostly empty) – that did the damage! Don’t get me wrong…it was a great beer festival with lovely folks, great ambience and a lot of fun and dancing, but even so, it has put me off lending a helping hand to my micro-brewer hus ..read more

How I Got Into Weaving – Louise Lemieux Bérubé

NAME: Louise Lemieux Bérubé BACKSTORY:  Born and raised in Montreal, Canada, Louise studied post-graduate jacquard at the Rhode Island School of Design before returning to Montreal and co-founding the Montreal Center for Contemporary Textiles which has run accredited courses in textile crafts since 1990 (now incorporating weaving, knitting, embroidery, felting, basketry and dyeing).  I attended a jacquard course there in 2009. It was an absolute pleasure to be in Louise’s working environment, engage with her work in the gallery, spending time with the technicians and looms, an ..read more

How I Got Into Weaving – Robyn Spady

NAME: Robyn Spady BACKSTORY: I must have met Robyn during the very first Complex Weavers Seminars I attended (2006) because we have been weaving soul sisters for a long time! She has a brilliant sense of humour and also was my inspiration to learn stitched double cloth for texture with her HGA’s Certificate of Excellence in Handweaving piece of a loom-controlled stitched double cloth hand muff which is just gorgeous. She is a real mine of information and teaching skill for all weaving levels, and her many students speak very highly of her. Among her areas of special interest, she loves t ..read more

How I Got Into Weaving – Deirdre Wood

NAME: Deirdre Wood BACKSTORY: Deirdre’s work fascinates me, especially when she started exploring curved shapes through the use of yarn properties. She specialises in narrow strip weaving. I listened to a talk at a symposium and found it fascinating to hear how she got into this particular field. She studied for a textiles degree at Farnham twenty five years ago and uses natural fibres to create three dimensional architectural tapestries by twisting and turning the woven fabric before being joined by sewing with her latest work exploring the possibilities of curved strip-weaving. HOW I G ..read more

NAME: Jennifer Moore BACKSTORY:  Back in 2010, Handweavers Guild of America‘s biennial conference, Convergence, was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I had the pleasure of giving two presentations there and also of being the juror for the yardage competition, which is not for the faint-hearted! But one of the highlights of the experience of being in Albuquerque for me was meeting and seeing for the first time in close quarters the incredible doublecloth wall hangings of Jennifer Moore. She truly is a master of double cloth, complex colour arrangements, mathematical patterns and musical str ..read more

How I Got Into Weaving – Lesley Willcock
The Loom Room

NAME: Lesley Willcock BACKGROUND:  Lesley and I first met (as she reminded me) at a shibori workshop that Kay Faulkner was leading at Chesham UK in December 2008. Lesley had only been weaving then for about 4 years but had just recently joined Complex Weavers and got a 32s loom – not bad for a newish weaver! We started off the way we have carried on – carrying my heavy 16S table loom between us in the disabled lift, we kept accidentally touching the walls (it was a large loom in a small space) which stopped the lift abruptly, causing fits of the giggles! Lesley is the excellent rep ..read more

How I Got Into Weaving – Andy Ross
The Loom Room

NAME: Andy Ross BACKGROUND:  Andy and I first got to know about each other via a mutual weaving friend Kathy Schicker. We were invited up to Shetland to service the AVL loom that the studio had acquired from Ann Sutton, and Andy invited us to stay, tour the island, give a presentation and meet other weavers and artists. We were there a week in the autumn of 2012 and had a wonderful time. The memories are still firmly lodged in my mind! I also came home with a very smelly fleece in my luggage and I was so surprised not to be stopped to explain myself when disembarking from the plane ..read more
