This article is sponsored by WeShare – my opinions are not. Berlin’s food scene is not only the fastest growing restaurant hot spot in Europe – it’s also one of the most diverse and forward-thinking scenes on the whole continent. Germany’s capital has 12 boroughs, and there are several that truly embody the rapidly evolving food offering of Berlin, but the one that stands out is the district of Neukölln. “From an incredible Levantine street food scene to hip restaurants and high-end Michelin starred restaurants, there is something to eat for every taste and budget” Located in the southe ..read more

Dear Reader, Welcome to the 5th edition of my very favorite places to eat in Berlin right now – the list of the BFS TOP 50 EATERIES 2020! People always ask me for my favourite restaurant in Berlin, but it’s impossible for me to name just one – so I figured I give you 50 instead! This year, marked by pandemic lockdowns and restrictions, has certainly been a complicated year for Berlin gastronomy and for a long time I contemplated, whether it made sense at all to publish this list in a year where restaurants really just are happy to be alive. I decided it did make sense, just to add a bit of nor ..read more

Otto

At first glance, it might be hard to see why Otto, a tiny restaurant on the quiet end of Oderberger Straße in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg district, should be a destination worth going out of your way for. But I’m gonna come out of the gate strong on this story and claim that Otto is not only special; it’s really one of THE most important German restaurant openings in Berlin over the last few years. Period. Do I have your attention? Good! Read on then. “Ursus belongs to a rare breed in Berlin’s food scene: natives” Vadim Otto Ursus has a very unusual name, but he’s also unusual in another regard ..read more

Chung King Noodles
Berlin Food Stories

In modern times, few dishes have managed to woo Berlin’s food aficionados as much as Chinese-style chili noodles. The notoriously spicy and fiercely aromatic dish seems to possess an unmatched ability to stir emotions. While serious chili noodle junkies have long pilgrimaged exclusively to Liu 成都味道 in Mitte for their Chengdu style noodle dishes, the conversion of Chung King Noodles from a pop-up into a proper restaurant in late 2019, finally offering their cult-like, contemporary Chongqing-style noodles on a daily basis, unleashed a new wave of chili noodle frenzy. “Over the course of just th ..read more

The Döner Top List
Berlin Food Stories

When you come to Berlin you have to eat a Döner Kebap, it’s as simple as that. The warm meat sandwich with Turkish origins, in all its messy and juicy glory, is an integral part of Berlin’s food DNA. And with over 1000 Döner restaurants (some say 1500) scattered across the city, the next Döner shop is never more than a stone’s throw away in Berlin. Be it for a quick lunch, between work snack, or the 5am stomach filler after a night out, you can always count on the Döner to save you. “Be it for a quick lunch, between work snack, or the 5am stomach filler after a night out, you can always count ..read more

The Döner Kebap
Berlin Food Stories

The very first thing I ate when I set foot in Berlin for the first time in the early 2000s was a Döner Kebap, and the first bite of that sandwich was a life changing experience that will stay with me forever. Despite the fact that my meal seemed to disintegrate in my hands, the combination of the crunchy bread, the fatty meat, the crisp vegetables and the glossy sauce dripping down my hand literally changed my outlook when it comes to food. I became obsessed with Döner Kebap, an obsession that was at least partially responsible for my permanent relocation to Berlin, and since then has taken me ..read more

This article is sponsored by Mercedes-AMG – my opinions are not The year of 2020 has certainly been a rollercoaster of emotions and the COVID-19 pandemic has affected all business to a varying extent. One industry that’s been affected most severely across the world is the hospitality business. In Germany, restaurants were locked down for weeks and countless projects and events were either cancelled or put on hold over the course of the year. A major cancellation was the Michelin Gala in Hamburg in March, which lead to the announcement of the 2020 Michelin stars being done via an online event o ..read more
