A Very British Scandal exposes 1950’s gender politics in a way that will speak to modern women.

The three-part serial A Very British Scandal is the best of the 2021 Christmas dramas and has enough temperature to break through the cold on a frosty winter’s night. However, don’t expect any festive cheer here as seasoned screenwriter Sarah Phelps puts a hard lens to 1950’s sexuality and gender politics resulting in three high tension episodes that have enough explosive moments and emotional twists to rival any other romance drama that has hit our screens in recent years. The miniseries is a dramatization of the highly prolific 1963 Argyll vs. Argyll case that judge ..read more

“Because they realized if all the slaves dressed the same, they would see how many of them there were, and they'd rise up and kill their masters.” If we know one thing about Logan Roy, it’s that he always wins. We’ve heard this repeated idea countless times throughout the season. Tom told Kendall, “My hunch...is that you're going to get fucked because I've seen you get fucked a lot. And I've never seen Logan get fucked once.” When Shiv told Roman that Logan wasn’t infallible, he responded, “No. Sure. I just don't think he ever fails or ever will.” Death, taxes, and Logan Roy. The Best of 2021: From It's a Sin to Mare of Easttown 2021 really delivered.

This without question my favourite post of the year. It's another chance to celebrate the best television had to offer. 2021 was another strong year. Standouts It's a Sin, Mare of Easttown, Only Murders in the Building and the long-awaited third season of Succession. Enjoy! The Great (January 2021. Channel 4) Kicking off the New Year in style was Tony McNamara's 'occasional true story' based on the life of Catherine the Great. Starting with the depiction of Catherine's marriage to Peter of Russia, The Great showed her gradually plotting against her new husband, leading up to her coup a ..read more

As this year's series of Strictly Come Dancing reaches its final stages, Matt Donnelly looks at what makes the show special and how it has stayed relevant where other shows have long since fallen out of favour with the British public. September means many things to different people. For children, it means the holidays are over and it's time to go back to school. It also represents the nights drawing in and the inevitable arrival of winter. However, for millions of us every year it signals the return of one of TV's most joyous creations; Strictly Come Dancing. For nineteen series, BBC One's s ..read more

REVIEW: Can American Network television still compete in the 'streaming era'?
The Custard TV
by

A new term has emerged in the US. The term 'cord cutter' refers to someone who has let their cable provider go and only watches streaming services. There are so many streaming options in the US it's understandable that consumers may feel that traditional broadcast television doesn't offer them anything exciting or discussion-worthy for them to continue to stay loyal to networks like CBS, NBC and FOX most of which have launched their own paid-for streamers like NBC's Peacock and CBS's Paramount+. With that in mind, I liked US native Mo Walker to look at the new shows the traditional broadcaster ..read more
