Happy New Year! I hope this finds you all healthy, and looking forward to 2023. I'm just back from a few weeks of rest in Oregon and California with the family, and now back in Vienna getting ready for a new year of trail running, triathlons, marathons, and travel adventure.  (Quinn [11], Christi, Sophie [16], and me enjoying a laugh in our US-adopted hometown of Santa Barbara in Dec, 2023) I will be blogging more often this year, and am switching to Substack for publishing. I find Substack is much better for comments and chats (and getting rid of spam comments), so I'm hoping it ..read more

Catching Up with Sarah Lavender Smith and Ultrarunning Magazine (How Tech Has...and Hasn't...Changed The Sport)
Scott Dunlap - A Trail Runner's Blog

I had a wonderful opportunity last month to catch up with Sarah Lavender Smith, a fellow ultrarunner, and one of the great original voices of our sport. She compiled our chat into this article for Ultrarunning Magazine, a publication I continue to read cover-to-cover every month (a subscription is a great gift idea!).  It's fun to look back at those past predictions of how technology and trail running might intersect. The wearables industry (watches and other products with body sensors) continues to grow 25%+ annually, shaping how tens of millions of athletes enter and continue their fit ..read more

Last week, I had a great opportunity to chat with Finn Melanson, host of The Singletrack Podcast. He has been producing some great interviews with a full range of crazy characters of trail and ultra running, and I was flattered to be in the line up. We chat about trail running, philosophy, blogging, podcasting, web3, adidas, screen time vs the outdoors, and more. It was a lot of fun!  The podcast episode is available on Apple or Spotify.  ..read more

For Better Health During the Pandemic, Is Two Hours Outdoors the New 10,000 Steps? (WSJ)

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) recently published an article pointing to the benefits of getting out in nature, citing my favorite subject of Shinrin-Yoku (forest bathing), and some new data points from Stanford University and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.  Some interesting insights: Spending time in the woods is strongly linked to lower blood pressure, heart rate and stress hormones and decreased anxiety, depression and fatigue. It also increases the presence of cancer-fighting cells. Time in a forest is linked to decreased inflammation, which has been implicated in chronic di ..read more

Happy 2021! Can We Race Now, Please? ;-)

Happy 2021, everyone! I hope this blog entry finds you well, and looking forward to the new year. Although a fresh calendar doesn't magically reset our respective realities, it's nice to have a mental construct to pack up 2020 and put it in the rear view mirror. Auf Weidersehen, zwanzig zwanzig! (Our newest family member and recovery coach, Moose) I remain with my girls hunkered down here in Linz, Austria, on government lockdown #3 until Jan 18th (is it lockdown #3? I'm losing track...). In the Austrian version of "lockdown", we are only allowed to leave our home with masks for essent ..read more

Griaß di, meine Lieben!  (translation - "good day, my loves!", in our local Tyrol mountain dialect) I hope this finds you all well, with hearts full of hope that cast spontaneous smiles across your face like comets. I know it is a challenge to be an optimist these days, but you really should be. Gratitude is our superpower! And when faced with the #CoronaTrumpBlackLivesMatterHomeSchoolingForeverZoomIsMyNewOfficeScrewMasksAllRacesCancelled* reality that is today, we should all be ready to full on supernova right now. Collect that energy, meine Lieben, your time is coming! (early Novembe ..read more

Why does running give you a high? Here’s the science (TED)

TED.com recently published an excerpt from Dr. Kelly McGonigal's new book, The Joy of Movement: How Exercise Helps Us Find Happiness, Hope, Connection, and Courage, about the most recent research on the runners high. I cracked up that I seem to have the most low-brow quote of all time amongst all the scientists: " Trail runner and triathlete Scott Dunlap sums up his running high this way: “I would equate it to two Red Bulls and vodka, three ibuprofen, plus a $50 winning Lotto ticket in your pocket.” " That quote was from so long ago! Still, it's fun to see it mixed with ..read more

Hello, I Miss You! Capturing The Feelings of the Corona Crisis...

How are you? I mean, really...how are you doing? I've said this, and meant it, more in the last two weeks than the previous five years. And, I miss you. I truly, truly miss you all. It's time that I admit that too. The things we take for granted, in sudden absence, can have stinging clarity. For me, it is mourning our race calendar, our sports. I find I mourn for the specifics - a starting line to reconnect with my tribe, the unique salty, sunburnt glow that comes from playing all day in nature, and a finish line where shared laughter is the ultimate victory. Not to mention the lazy evening ..read more

Buongiorno! A Morning Run Through Rome...
Scott Dunlap - A Trail Runner's Blog
by Scott Dunlap

It was a frosty February morning in Rome, as I repeatedly peaked out of the hotel lobby window in desperate search of a few rays of sunshine gracing the cobblestone streets. I had already mistakenly stepped out pre-sunrise, only to realize my error when I instantly burst into full body goosebumps tall enough to make a pufferfish jealous. This was my own fault, of course, having wishfully packed only shorts and t's while glancing at the projected 60+ F degree highs promised by my "smart" phone. But the ultrarunner in me knew better - had this been a race trip, I would have (rightfully) brought ..read more

Well, That Didn't Work
Scott Dunlap - A Trail Runner's Blog

Well, that didn’t work. I shut down this blog with the best of intentions, truly. A few precious hours regained. But in the absence of blogging I have found, quite selfishly, that writing is more catholicon than chore. It helps shape the narrative of my overloaded life, not add to its burden. The constant search for the story arc becomes this meditative connective tissue fusing dreams and reality, providing much needed agency for humility, courage, and meaning. Plus it helps me find cool new words like “catholicon”. ;-)  Storytelling is a great personal escape, it turns out. I have so much ..read more
