Top bunk or lower bunk? (1st time hostel stay)

Staying in a dorm-style hostel for the 1st time. Would you recommend the top bunk or the lower one? And why? My own thoughts without experience: the top bunk. These are only guesses; I've never even slept in a bunk bed before. No dirt or anything to fall on you. You feel less "movement" from someone above (maybe?) Maybe a tiny bit more secure. You can leave your stuff on the bed and it will not be as accessible or obvious. submitted by /u/randopop21 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hello all! In anticipation of my upcoming trip (18th June - 31st July) to Europe, I thought I would share the itinerary for feedback/recommendations. I'll be staying in hostels, and trying to keep the cost of the trip below USD$4000. I'm interested in natural beauty and cultural tourism - I don't really care too much for night life. Rome - 3 nights Lecce - 3 nights Ferry to Vlorë - 1 night Himarë - 3 nights Sarandë - 1 night (might seem a little silly as Himarë is only 1.5hr bus away, but I want to be able to experience the night life/restaurants) Gjirokaster - 1 night Tirana - 1 night Shkode ..read more

Have any solo women travellers participated in one of those planned solo women tour groups?

This possibly isn’t super related to solo travel but I’ve seen multiple different companies who plan trips for solo women travellers to come together and travel as solo women together rather than alone. I’ve never done solo travel before and am interested in doing something like this before I do. I know they can be expensive but that’s not a big issue for me rn. Anyone ever done this? What are your thoughts? Is it worth it? submitted by /u/not_cinderella [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Running alone in South/Central America?

Hey, I am traveling from Guatemala to Argentina over the next months and love running, I especcially like just going out without a plan and running for 10-15k, going wherever looks interesting. However Ive heard some things about how accidently running in the wrong area can get you in lots of trouble and I was wondering whether anyone here has any experience with this and can weight in on how safe it is to run alone, (during the day), mostly in touristy backpacker areas like Antigua, Hopkins or Cusco Thanks for any input. submitted by /u/EwoksAreAwesome [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Two weeks Taiwan - critique my itinerary

Quick intro: early 20s fairly experienced solo traveller. I'm on a budget so staying in hostels, eating street food, and avoiding tours/taxis/expensive attractions etc wherever possible. My main interest are culture and history, but I want to see some nature too. Love picturesque streets, markets, cafe hopping, easy-moderate (half)day hikes, nice views, walking around for hours on end. I'm flying in from Thailand so jetlag won't be a big issue :) Day 1: land at Taipei Airport 5pm. Figure out sim and transport cards, make my way to my hostel (haven't booked one yet - ideas for good areas to st ..read more

Shortening stay at airbnb rental?
Reddit : Where traveling solo is traveling social!

A friend told me it's possible through Airbnb even if you book for a certain period to change the length of your stay with no penalty if you don't like the place. So he said if a place looks good I could book for longer and if it turns out otherwise just change the length of my stay. But I can't find info to confirm this online. Is this an Airbnb policy or does the host have to offer that? I'm looking to book a place in kuala lumpur and every place I see says no refund for cancelation and I don't see any info at all on changing stay length. submitted by /u/sobresal [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Anybody else have a Travel Music Playlist?

I journal while I travel to remember my sweet moments. I write all I can but sometimes it doesn’t exactly capture the exact moment or mood. But what actually captures it for me is music. There are certain songs I heard while I travelled that I associate with that place and I remember exactly how I was feeling in that moment so I started adding songs to a separate playlist. For example: when I was travelling Guatemala my host introduced me to a song while sitting by the lake. It’s such a nice song and reminds me of the peace near the lake and how I was so calm at that moment at Attilan While ..read more

Ahoyhoy there, I’m 25, male and from the UK. I will be solo travelling across various states for just over 3 weeks at the end of August/start of September. I’m relatively deep into my planning both logistically speaking and in research of things to do (about 60% of flights and accommodation is booked). I’m staying in a mix of accommodation and am going to a mix of rural locations/small towns and cities. I will be flying the long legs of the journey, but will be renting trucks when I’m situated somewhere for a while. I have never solo travelled before (apart from the odd weekend in the UK), no ..read more

Am I crazy for not including the Thai islands in my South East Asia solo trip for July?

I’m planning a trip to South East Asia where I’ll be visiting the Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Malaysia. The general plan is to start in Hanoi, explore the North (Ha long, Ninh Binh), then make my way down to Hoi An, and then down to Ho Chi Minh. And I’d then go over to to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, and then into Thailand, with Malaysia and KL being the final stop. As for Thailand, since it’s July and the weather on the Andaman side my not be the best, I’ve not considered Phuket, Krabi, Ao Nang, Phi Phi etc etc. So I feel confident that it’s best to rule out all these places. But on the gul ..read more

Bizarre first-time experience in Spain

I (23F) had a 5-days solo trip in Spain. Here are some weird things I have met in Barcelona, which I have never encountered in my past 20 years: On Sunday morning, I left at 6:30 a.m. to queue for free entry to Sagrada Familia, and the streets were almost empty. As I walked, suddenly a pedestrian coming towards me dodged to the side, and then a police hurried towards me, shouting something in Spanish (which I couldn't understand). So I quickly turned to see what was happening. About ten meters behind me, there were two guys, although I didn't see them doing anything. The police arrested the ..read more
