If there had been a shower...

This weekend, we would have been celebrating our sweet boy with a baby shower in Toronto. There were plans to spend quality time with family and talk all things baby before returning to Montreal where our little one will be born. The invites were ready, the registry was made and my sister had already gone overboard with balloons. And then came a virus that pressed pause on the entire world and suspended all plans.  Like everyone else, we’ve had to adapt. As much as I was looking forward to belly rubs and shower games, it wasn’t meant to be. In lieu of a traditional shower, I’m loo ..read more

Fel and Wes are having a baby! I’m smiling as I type this because this is by far the most exciting news we’ve ever shared on the blog :D  We’re due June 8th which happens to be right smack in the middle of our 32nd birthdays. To say we’ll have a lot to celebrate this year is an understatement! If you’re doing the math in your head, that means we’re about 5 months pregnant and nearly through the second trimester. Some people asked why we chose to keep the news a secret for so long but it wasn’t intentional at all. The honest and simple truth is, we’ve been busy. Settling into a new ..read more

20+ Delicious Hungarian Foods Worth Travelling to Hungary For

I love food.  So much so that, as a child, it was never all that difficult to get me to eat. The bigger problem for my parents was getting me to stop eating. Not much has changed some twenty years later and, coupled with my love for travel, it should come as no surprise that my favourite way to experience a new culture is through its food.  After several visits to Budapest, Hungarian cuisine has managed to creep its way up my list of favourite foods. But I wouldn’t have been able to name a single Hungarian dish a few years ago. It wasn’t until I met Wes that I was introduced t ..read more

The Best Way to Spend One Day in Kazan, Russia

Our guide to Kazan highlights how to make the most of one day in this fascinating city. We’re sharing where to go, where to eat and why it’s worth visiting the Kremlin twice in one day. To help you orient yourself with the city, we’ve pinned the best things to do in Kazan on a map at the bottom of this post.   Russia was full of surprises for us and I think that’s largely because of how we chose to approach each destination. We were inspired to rent bikes in Veliky Novgorod despite this not being listed in a single guide. We took a bus to Suzdal even with intimidating thunde ..read more

On New Beginnings and Moving to Montreal

It’s official! Fel and Wes are among the newest residents of Montreal, Quebec.  We’ve signed a lease on a cozy 1 bedroom apartment and, for the first time since 2013, we’ll be staying put. Well, at least until the end of June. We’re still getting used to the city, the cold and the French, but are incredibly happy with our choice so far. I’m hesitant to say we’re “settling down” because I feel that term implies we’re missing out on something or compromising for less in a way.  One source defines settling as: to begin to live a quiet and steady life by getting a regular job, ge ..read more

Mountains That Move You: A Detailed Guide to Kazbegi, Georgia

From the moment we first set foot in Georgia, I was in awe.  Unlike most people who start their travels in Tbilisi, we crossed into Georgia from Russia which meant two things: ◈ Our journey from Vladikavkaz to Tbilisi was slightly nerve-wracking given the current state of affairs between Russia and Georgia. We expected the worst, hoped for the best and (luckily) had a problem-free border crossing. ◈ Our very first day in Georgia was spent driving the Georgian Military Highway through the beautiful region of Kazbegi. As far as first impressions go, we really couldn’t have asked for ..read more

Pros and Cons of Staying at a Guesthouse in Georgia

All those good things you’ve heard about Georgian hospitality are true. We spent a month travelling throughout the country and some of our most memorable moments were the ones we shared with locals. Bakers let us see what they had baking in the oven, market vendors encouraged us to taste what they had for sale, and even gas station attendants invited us to eat with them during their dinner break. But nothing quite compares to the generosity we experienced in people’s homes. Staying at a guesthouse in Georgia is something I would recommend to anyone headed to the Caucasus region but esp ..read more

A Guide to Exploring Veliky Novgorod, One of Russia’s Oldest Cities

On the east side of the Kremlevskiy pedestrian bridge in Veliky Novgorod, you’ll find a bronze sculpture of a young lady. She’s laying back with her legs stretched out, ankles crossed, shoes off and a smile on her face. There’s something about her expression that really catches your attention. Her moment of gratitude as she relaxes on the river bank is almost contagious. Titled “Tourist” by Russian artist Vadim Borovykh, she is presumably enjoying a break after a long day of sightseeing in this historical city. The sculpture perfectly sums up a visit to Veliky Novgorod: calm, relax ..read more

Vladikavkaz to Tbilisi: Tips for Crossing the Border from Russia to Georgia

“Adeen, pozhaluysta.“ I mumbled to the attendant in my best Russian as I pointed to a pastry behind the glass counter. This point-and-hope approach to ordering had worked pretty well throughout our travels in Russia but I wasn’t sure it would work out here at the Georgian border. “Oh, you want one of those? That one has meat inside but this one here is filled with cheese. It’s really good.” I was completely caught off guard by the young man’s perfect English. I barely detected an accent but could tell he was trying to hide a smile at my attempted Russian. I opted for the cheese-filled k ..read more
