Act of Traveling - Traveling beyond the guidebook

Recently we had the opportunity to travel with our family through Yucatán, Mexico. Our first long distant trip after the global pandemic. Mexico is a huge country and has a lot to offer, but we decided to stay on the Yucatan peninsula. With our rental car, we crossed 3 states: Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatan. And to make a long story short: yes, it was perfectly safe (we traveled alone in our rental car), yes there was a lot to see (you could easily spend an entire month there), and yes, we had a fantastic time!  We circled the peninsula and stayed successively in Playa del Carmen, Ri ..read more

Ode to the Dutch landscape (or why I hiked across the country from east to west)
Act of Traveling - Traveling beyond the guidebook

Let me take you on a blind date with the Netherlands! Be surprised as I was, when I walked 414 kilometers (257 miles) through the Kingdom. Hiking in the Netherlands: from a landscape of cows and estates in the east, forests and heathlands in the center, to the low grasslands (polders) and sandy coastal areas in the west. The route I followed was diverse and introduced me to the interesting texture of the landscapes that Holland has to offer.  For this blog post, I divided the route into 3 parts: east, middle and west. Each section has its own unique attractions. In between, I share some p ..read more

Street art illuminated – STRAAT museum Amsterdam
Act of Traveling - Traveling beyond the guidebook
by Emiel Van Den Boomen

Does street art, as its name suggests, belong in the street? Is street art inside still street art? Well, I think it is! When in Amsterdam please consider to visit STRAAT, a museum dedicated to street art. It’s powerful in multiple facets: the building is a former ship yard (raw and industrial), the museum displays more than 150 artworks by 130 artists, and the various styles produce a pleasant cacophony of artistic noise. As you can see on the pictures, this museum is all about street art at its finest. Why I like street art? It has no rules. Sometimes the freedom of expression is shown by a ..read more

10 magical forest moments (captured in a photograph)
Act of Traveling - Traveling beyond the guidebook
by Emiel Van Den Boomen

A forest is magic. At least to me. The smell, the sounds (or sometimes just the pure silence) and the colors. That magic is enhanced by the (quarterly) change of color, fog, and sometimes a wild animal. For people following me on Instagram, my change of perspective has been evident: from travel to forest photography. Discovering the sheer beauty of nature parks and forests near my hometown. Places I never visited before because my focus was always on international traveling. But maybe now it’s time to say: the best journey takes you home? Welcome to the Marker Wadden archipelago, a unique nature park in the Netherlands
Act of Traveling - Traveling beyond the guidebook

“What if I told you that birds were already circling high up in the sky when our machines were still finishing their work? It took us 4 years to create this brand-new archipelago and even before the machines were taken back to shore, birds and fish had already started to colonize the place. They couldn’t wait for us to leave. An island in the middle of nowhere with lots of food – perfect for birds.” Welcome to Marker Wadden, indeed the newest piece of land in the Netherlands. The Dutch are famous for fighting against the water and creating new land instead (that started hundreds of years ..read more

10 Pictures that make you want to visit Marrakech Medina
Act of Traveling - Traveling beyond the guidebook

A picture is worth a thousand words. I was a bit overwhelmed by the Marrakech medina: the narrow alleys where pedestrians are being “harassed” by motorbikes, pushy salesmen, and a continuous flow of people wanting to be your local guide (don’t fall for that sales trick). It can be crazy sometimes. So, I consciously searched for peace and quiet to forget about all that bustle. How? First of all, we booked ourselves a very relaxing and beautifully designed hotel: Riad42. Secondly, I went out to search for special places away from the crowds. Hope these pictures will convince you to discover the ..read more

Beautiful hikes in Austria: visit the Dachstein glacier
Act of Traveling - Traveling beyond the guidebook

After a lovely hike around the Styrian Bodensee and a short transit we suddenly found ourselves on top of a gondola towards the Dachstein glacier! Yes, you read correctly, on TOP of the gondola. Rising over 1000 vertical meters, these gondola’s have a small space on the roof available for the lucky (and daring) few. The ride up the Dachstein glacier is a stunning panoramic experience in its own right – and being on top of the gondola just adds more to the fun! Check out the second part of the video (starting at 1min35) below and you understand exactly what I mean. After a short trip we ..read more

Beautiful hikes in Austria: Styrian Bodensee (valley of plunging waters)
Act of Traveling - Traveling beyond the guidebook
by Emiel Van Den Boomen

Via a narrow passage with high pines on both sides we walk toward the Styrian Bodensee. 1143 meters above sea level, the lake is beautifully encircled with high mountain slopes on all sides. It’s a kind of bowl; a lush green bowl of which the edges meet at the waterfall. At the waterfall, ice-cold water plunges down and feeds the lake, which is full of thousands of trout. When it’s not windy, the smooth surface of the lake reflects the trees and the waterfall. Today it’s cloudy and it’s raining a bit, but that doesn’t stop us from making a (easy) walk around the lake because the surroundings ..read more

Thursday afternoon, end of May: my first encounter with Graz. After a short walk I find myself on an intersection opposite a majestic looking building. You can feel its historical importance. A man with a beer barrel is waiting to cross the street. Later on, I will discover that meeting each other for a drink at one of Graz’ many bars and restaurants in the old town is an essential part of the local culture. Being sure he will guide me to the interesting places, I follow the man with his barrel and walk towards the historical city center. Introduction: City trip Graz, Austria Somewhere in the ..read more
